Overview
This is a great opportunity to explore another stretch of our amazing southwest coastline, The stunningly South Cornish Coast and the beautiful South Devon coastline are some of England’s’ finest, and this alone is more than enough reason to visit! Towering cliffs and rugged headlands are all lapped by inviting Mediterranean blue waters, and in between are secluded sandy bays and quaint fishing hamlets. Deep estuaries dramatically cut their way inland, carving beautiful, isolated peninsulas. Local ferries will drop us onto these remote and peaceful headlands thereby allowing us to be accessing some thoroughly enjoyable walks. Along the way we will call into picturesque villages and enjoy the hospitality of the inviting cafes or welcoming country inns. The delightful Duke of Cornwall Hotel is a treasure in the heart of Devon's city-by-the sea. It was built in the grand age of steam and the opulence of time flows through Plymouth's first luxury hotel. Over 150 years later it continues to provide first class accommodation in a traditional friendly atmosphere … What more could you possibly want for a superb mini holiday weekend away…

Location & Itinerary
Plymouth lies sandwiched between the estuaries of four rivers, The Plym, the Tamar, the Tavy and the Lynher. These rivers wend their way inland to their sources high up in the stunningly beautiful Dartmoor National Park, where the uniquely shaped windblown rocky tors tower over endless miles of purple blooming heather moors. Some days we will start by boarding a ferry and cruising out across the bay. The coastline is stunning, but it is further divided by more rivers as they flow down to the sea, so we may have to call in another ferryman to exit the walk at the end! However, the ferries add a bit of fun to the walks and enable us to enjoy some amazing linear walks along some of the most beautiful sections of the South West Coastal Path!
One possibility for a lovely walk is to head out over the water, across the bay and into Cornwall. Here is the fabulous “Outside Devon and Cornwall” Inn which marks the beginning of this very scenically varied walk around Tamar Lake and Headland Chapel. We’ll walk alongside the river, view the estuary and Plymouth Sound, skip across the beautiful wide coastal sweep of Whitsand Bay, oh and just sit and stare out from the amazing headland viewpoint of Rame Head. Another day we may sail out over the River Plym where a ferry can drop us off at Mount Batten. The coastal path then wanders around a series of headlands all with their own watch towers and forts. Along the way there are peaceful bays, traditional country inns as well as nature reserves, including the marine nature reserve at Wembury. Here people may conclude their day and head back whilst others may forge on in the hope of hopping on the ferry to Noss Mayo. But then there is the stunning section of the coast beyond here too, which is also a strong contender for a day’s walk. This beautiful stretch of coast runs from Mothercombe, down to the magnificent Meadowsfoot Beach, then the coastal path leads through Stokes to St Peters Church. It is often best to walk this section east to west thereby exploiting the sun and enjoying the best of the amazing seascapes from the stunning cliff top path as we head back to Noss Mayo. Whatever walks we finally decide to do we are truly spoilt for choice and if you like coastal walking, you certainly won’t be disappointed!
To allow you to choose a walk that suits you best, WalkWise UK will provide a minimum of two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On all days there will be a harder walk of 10-12 miles and a gentler walk of 7-9 miles. However, the programme is flexible and can be altered to suit your needs. All walks are weather dependent and own transport or coaches may be taken to the walk starts.
Walkwise will offer two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On each day there will be a harder walk of 10 or more miles with 1,500ft+ of ascent, and a gentler walk of 6-9 miles with less ascent.
All walks are weather dependent and subject to change.
Travel & Stay
The Duke of Cornwall, Plymouth's original character hotel, is a true treasure in the heart of Devon's city-by-the sea. Built during the Golden Age of steam, the Duke of Cornwall, was Plymouth's first luxury hotel and continues to provide first class accommodation today, with towers and turrets, ballrooms, oak panels, elaborate ceiling roses, Sir John Betjeman, Poet described The Duke of Cornwall "as one of the nation's finest examples of Victorian architecture". Indeed in 1988 a restoration programme began, which exposed the building's original features, engravings and mouldings making it the special place it is today. There are 72 rooms and suites, each with a unique view, some coastal, some cityscape. The restaurant holds 2 RAC Blue Ribbons and it is an AA Rosette award winning Restaurant, so we’ll be well fed too. Add to this is prominent position in the town, being, just minutes from the train stations, the excellent Theatre Royal and the lively Barbican and marina area. In fact it's the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful South West. Naturally all the hotel bedrooms are well appointed, en suite and come with all the usual facilities including telephone, radio alarm, hair dryer, digital freeview TV, tea and coffee making facilities and trouser press. 24-hour room service and internet access is also available. Oh and the hotel works closely with McCauleys Health Club which is two walk from the hotel and can offer you a discounted session rate.
The address is Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Millbay Rd, Plymouth PL1 3LG
