Overview

The Isle of Portland juts out into the English Channel, with a causeway connecting it to the mainland. This means that the island enjoys a sunnier and drier climate than the mainland. The island is home to some of the most fantastic scenery found on the heritage coast and it is an ideal venue in itself to explore. Of course we will have the opportunity to explore the islands highlights but there is a lot more of the stunning Dorset coastline to visit too, with Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Abbotsbury and Chesil Beach all beckoning to us! The hotel compliments the walking and is an ideal venue to base ourselves. It has stunning views across the causeway to the coastline beyond; the food, service and friendly staff all add to the mix and help create the ideal walking weekend away.

Location & Itinerary

Is this for me?

To allow you to choose a walk that suits you best, we will provide a minimum of two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On both days there will be a harder walk of 10-12 miles with up to 2,000ft of ascent and a gentler walk of 7-10 miles with less ascent.

Travel & Stay

Our three star Hotel for this lovely break is set on the summit of the Isle of Portland and has spectacular coastal views overlooking Chesil Beach and Weymouth Bay. The hotel makes the most of its situation and the views abound from the bar, restaurant and the coffee shop. The bedrooms have all been designed with comfort in mind and are en suite with shower and bath, and all come with satellite TV, radio, hairdryer and hospitality tray. The hotel has its own leisure centre with gymnasium, steam room and sauna! Or if you have the desire or ability, there’s a squash court too! There are other facilities such as a beauty suite, masseuse and various exercise classes - but you may need to call ahead and book to secure a suitable slot.

Around the Hotel: On the Isle of Portland, you can bird watch, windsurf, go fishing, rock climb, horse ride, or just relax. Weymouth is close by and is a lovely town. Built on the estuary there is a lovely harbour area that has been recently developed and now has a nice mixture of bars and restaurants which makes for a pleasant evening out.  It also has a reasonable shopping centre or if you don’t want to walk you can simply relax at the cinemas or theatre or wander around a local nature reserves. Just further afield there are number of historic houses and castles, so you won’t be lost for things to do if the weather is not too kind. All in all, this is a great place to get away from it all in the winter months.

Travel Insurance: It is also recommended that when travelling on holiday or attending Spice weekends away in the UK or overseas that you have adequate travel insurance in case of emergency, cancellation, etc. Travel insurance is an important aspect to booking a weekend or holiday, giving you protection against unforeseen circumstances. We also strongly recommend a personal travel insurance policy that includes COVID-19 cover. While we cannot recommend specific insurance policies as everyone’s requirements are personal to them, Spice have linked up with market leader Staysure Travel Insurance which you may like to take a look at.
