Ramble: Moel Famau
Overview
A breathtaking ridge top walk in the Clwydian Hills which climbs to the top of the Jubilee Tower. The walk affords birdseye views over the valleys either side of the ridge and underfoot there is a mixture of excellent stony mountain and forest tracks. By parking at an altitude of over 1000 feet, the vertical ascent to the Jubilee Tower is reduced to less than 800 feet. Please bring your walking boots as there are some slopes to gain the views, and a packed lunch as we will be stopping for a picnic.
Location & Itinerary
Moel Famau Bwlch Pen Barras Car Park
Directions: From Mcr proceed to end of M56 at J16, which merges seamlessly here into the A494, signposted North Wales and Queensferry. Carry straight on (now on the A494) for about 7 miles, initially signposted Queensferry, but then follow signs for Mold and fork off left at the junction marked ‘33B’, signposted Mold A494. This junction is not far after the long uphill incline that takes you out of the Queensferry built-up area. You then follow the A494 on Mold and then Ruthin signs for just over another 7 miles through various traffic lights and roundabouts until about half a mile past the ‘We Three Loggerheads’ pub (and the Loggerheads Country Park) you turn right signposted Tafarn y Gelyn and Moel Famau. Go uphill on this small road for 2 miles at which point you encounter the Moel Famau Bwlch Pen Barras Car Park (£1.50 all day parking) where we meet, right at the top of the pass. Sorry, no postcode for the car park, but CH7 5SJ will get you onto the small road that leads to the car park, about 1 ½ miles before the car park. Any probs call Richard on 07740 698432.
