Sunday Walk: Irwell Valley Sculpture Trail
Overview
A walk which takes in the prettiest section of the Irwell Valley Sculpture Trail. We start at Burrs Country Park, site of a historic mill, where we see the ‘Picnic Area’ and ‘Stone Cycle’ sculptures, then head north along the banks of the River Irwell. Echoes of our industrial heritage are everywhere, now transformed into a quiet rural setting. We continue along the valley to Nuttall Park in Ramsbottom where we have our picnic lunch and then return back down the Irwell Valley to the cars, mostly retracing our steps, but diverting from the outward route at some points to see other parts of the valley as well. As ever, please bring your walking boots and some sandwiches for a picnic.
Facilities: At the start of the walk, if you have a cup of tea at The Lamppost Cafe next to the car park where we meet we imagine that they will let you use their loos. There are also public toilets halfway round in Nuttall Park.

From Mcr get to J17 on M60 and exit here onto the A56 signposted Whitefield. Continue on the A56 for nearly 4 miles thru lots of traffic lights in towards Bury town centre. When you reach Bury Town Hall on your right you start to bend left onto the Jubilee Way towards Bolton. Get over to the right hand lanes signed Bolton A58, then follow signs for Ramsbottom B6214. Having gone about 0.8 miles from the Town Hall (through a lot of junctions) take a right signposted Burrs Country Park just after the road narrows to a single carriageway. Continue thru a mini roundabout and enter the Park by the waterwheel and go forward on the cobbled road towards the huge chimney. There are several car parks (currently free), park in any, but the best is at the base of the chimney (where we meet). Postcode BL8 1DA for SatNav.
