Overview
Join us for our first hostel weekend of the new year as we head to the Peak District and the lovely village of Hathersage.
This is a social and walking weekend and there is also the opportunity to do those nice little tea shop visits and relax in the countryside.
If you’ve never been on a Spice weekend before give it a go - you might need a week to recover but we're sure you'll think it’s worth it. If you have been before you’ll know how popular they are!
Included in the weekend are one cooked breakfast, one continental breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals. Help with cooking breakfasts and the cleaning up is as always very much welcomed. There will be two optional guided walks with Alan across the weekend...
Saturday walk at 10:30am...
Starting at the hostel we walk to St Michael’s Church at Bank Top. From here we go north towards North Lees Hall then through forests and boulder fields to reach the summit of Stanage Edge. If the weather is kind, we should have a spectacular view of rolling hills and valleys below. From here we descend westward down to Dennis Knoll where we join a footpath southward to Green’s House then Gatehouse. Continuing southerly, we follow a footpath in a field on the left-hand side and parallel to Hurstclough Lane. At the point where the road turns right there is a footpath on the left to Nether Hurst. From here we follow footpaths past Thorpe Farm down to “The Hill” and onwards to our accommodation via Jagger’s Lane.
A walk of approx. 8 miles. (A shorter route missing out the Stanage Edge summit will be an option, and this will reduce the walk to approx. 6 miles).
Sunday walk at 10:30am...
Starting at the hostel we cross the main road and follow a footpath that takes us southeast between cottages and over a footbridge that joins a side road. Here we turn right, go under the viaduct following the road towards a lodge. To the left of the lodge, we follow the signpost to Leadmill. At the main road we turn right, walk up the hill and take the second road on the right towards Hazelford. From here we take a bridleway then footpath towards Highlow Wood. Once through the wood we turn right to Highlow Hall and continue to Offerton. As we exit the village there is a footpath to the right taking us down to the River Derwent. Once at the river we turn right following the riverbank footpath back to Leadmill Bridge where we turn left and retrace our steps back to our accommodation.
A walk of approx. 6 miles. (A shorter route missing out the riverbank walk will be an option, and this will reduce the walk to approx. 4 miles).
Whether you’re a brand new member, an ‘old hat’ or one of the many that have been with us for a little while, and you like having fun with other like-minded Spice members then this really is a great weekend to book. It’s also a great starter weekend if you’ve not been away with us before - very laid back - you can do as much or as little as you choose; it’s your weekend away. But, be warned – our weekend breaks often fill up really quickly so get your booking in now to avoid being disappointed.
Includes
two nights' hostel accommodation, one full cooked breakfast, one continental breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals
Location & Itinerary
Hathersage is a large village in the Hope Valley, historically associated with Robin Hood and Charlotte Bronte, and some of her novels are set here.
Hathersage is situated in the Peak District at the southern end of the Pennines and there is great cycling and walking in the area. Sights to see in the area include Stanage Edge, Burbage Edge, and the river Derwent, which flows just south of the village at Leadmill.
The village has a range of shops, selling local produce, crafts, and outdoor equipment. Of course, there is also a selection of pubs and cafes to keep us hydrated.
Hathersage is also home to a heated outdoor pool, which has recently been renovated, and is now open all year, except in cases of extreme weather, so bring your costume!
The itinerary for the weekend will be weather dependent and also depends on just what people want to do. Alan will be leading walks on both Saturday and Sunday. There is great cycling in the area as well as caves, Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, plenty of craft shops, pubs and tea shops.
The heated pool will be available for bookings up until 3pm each day.
Included is a cooked breakfast on Saturday morning and a continental breakfast on Sunday morning. We'll bring supplies for you to make a packed lunch each day. We'll eat in the hostel one night and go out for dinner on the other.
Travel & Stay
The accommodation is mainly in dormitories split across the main house and a separate annexe, and the dormitories sleep four or six people in bunk beds. Some rooms have a washbasin, but showers and toilets are non en-suite in most rooms. There is just one very small single room available. There is also an en-suite double room available for a couple to share.
Rooms are generally allocated on a first come first served basis however we are unable to commit to you getting the room of your choice as it very much depends upon the male/female split on the weekend.
Bedding is provided but please bring your own towel.
Downstairs there is dining room, a lounge and a well-equipped self-catering kitchen. There is also a drying room in the basement so you can get your kit dry for the next day's adventures.
Outside is a lawned area with some picnic tables.
For those needing to keep in touch with the outside world there is mobile phone coverage on most networks and also free wi-fi.
