Isle of Bute Social and Walking Break
Overview
Join us as we enjoy another social and walking weekend in Scotland. Our destination is the small island of Bute and the Glenburn Hotel in Rothesay. Bute is a pretty little island about 15 miles long and less than 5 miles wide just off the west coast of southern Scotland. With a population of around 6,500, it is very easy to reach from central Scotland and beyond and was a popular holiday destination during Victorian times when the Clyde was booming.
It still has much to offer with hills in the north, lots of sandy beaches, ruined chapels and forts.. Bute's many gardens benefit from the Gulf Stream which gives the island a mild climate enabling palm trees and other exotic plants to grow. One of the main visitor attractions is the spectacular Mount Stuart House which is definitely worth a trip.
Includes
This fantastic weekend offers real value as your trip includes Friday evening dinner, Saturday Walks (potential walks include Kilchatten Bay - a circular walk regarded as one of the finest on the island - around 6 miles and 300m of ascent, Kilmichael archeology walk, Glecknabrae - a 5 mile walk taking in ciarns and ruined chapel, perhaps linking with Canada Hill) and Place of Interest Itinerary (this may include Mount Stuart, Rothesay Victorian Loos, Rothesay Castle and Ascog Hall Fernery and Graden), Saturday evening meal and cabaret night and breakfasts on both mornings.
Extras
Transport on the island for walks and places of interest.
Location & Itinerary
Our weekend is on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
Travel & Stay
The Glenburn is a grand and elegant choice for our stay. The hotel is set in a prime position atop delightful terraced gardens and was originally constructed in 1892 as a hydrotherapy retreat. It commands fabulous views overlooking Rothesay Bay and the Cowal Peninsula. Relax with a drink in the welcoming bar or perhaps enjoy a game of snooker. After dinner in the restaurant, a unique and varied programme of top class live entertainment will keep us entertained in the beautifully restored ballroom.
You'll need to book a boat! Bute is an island and as such a ferry service runs from Wemyss Bay, Gourock to Rothesay. Ferries run roughly on the hour (please check) and cost (this season) is £6.30 return fare (the crossing takes 35 minutes). Cars can be taken at a cost of £22.60 return (this season). Wemyss Bay is easily accessible from Glasgow Central Train Station.
