Have you ever wanted to fly a hovercraft? Ok that’s probably a bit of a silly question – who wouldn’t? it’s a fantastic opportunity to fly across the ground in a whirlwind of air and a flurry of sea spray. It’s also one of those things that not many people do, unless they’ve been bought a red-letter day. 

What Is A Hovercraft?

The word ‘hovercraft’ can conjure up a few different images in people’s heads, so let’s set this straight. We don’t mean huge drones with spinning turbines, or aeroplanes. We mean inflatable air vehicle that can be driven on land and even on the water. It works by using air pressure to inflate a huge air sac below the seat and motor, lifting the vehicle off the ground and allowing it to ‘hover’. They are often used in the military or in competitions, and in some parts of the world they are even used as everyday transport over difficult terrain.

What’s Involved?

Instead of our usual flying experience, this is a new and exciting twist. Our hovercraft flying session will be on both land and water as part of an exclusive experience for Spice members. Members will take turns in flying the hovercraft, landing it on land and water and getting to know the controls. During the 2 hour session, everyone will have a chance to fly, taking turns. Our instructor will teach you how to control the hovercraft at walking speed, before ratcheting up the intensity for some speed challenges. Each person will be taught at each level, and soon you will be performing handbrake turns and doughnuts like a pro! Once the instructor is confident in your abilities, you will take turns doing laps of a training circuit at a speed of your choice.

But it doesn’t end there. Once you’ve done your laps, you’ll be taught how to travel from land to water and back again. If you follow the instructions given you will pull this off without a hitch, but a change of clothes is always a useful thing to pack for those who aren’t great at paying attention! You will need to kneel down in the hovercraft throughout the event, so sadly we don’t recommend it for anyone who suffers from knee issues. There will be an opportunity to go out for lunch after the event and swap stories.
