ATOL Peace of Mind

Oct 01, 2019

How to ensure your air holiday is protect (pre-arranged or tailor-made holiday package)

The acronym ATOL is thrown around a lot. Make sure your holiday is protected by ATOL! Be sure to choose and ATOL bonded company! Etc, Etc...

But how many of us actually know what it all means and why it is so important?

ATOL is an Air Travel Organisers Licence and it protects you from losing your money or being stranded abroad in cases where your tour operator fails. Fortunately it isn't called upon too frequently but when it is it can be on a huge scale as in the recent case with Thomas Cook and is extremely traumatic for all those involved so anyone covered is very, very relieved that they won't be out of pocket!

So what is the ATOL scheme?

Tour operators like Spice Holidays who create and sell air holiday packages must have an ATOL license and must issue a certificate to you to prove that protection is in place, this give you the peace of mind to know that if the worse does happens you are protected.

Before an ATOL is issued the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) checks the organisation on many levels, in order to reduce the risk of failure of the licence holder and as part of the license agreement they are required to pay into the CAA’s financial guarantee scheme - this provides money to protect customers. If your tour operator were to fail, the CAA will either make a refund to you, or, if you're abroad, it will arrange for you to finish your holiday and fly home. If the airline you’re due to travel with fails but the other elements of the package your have booked are still in place, the ATOL-protected tour operator must make alternative flight arrangements for you, whether you’re already on holiday or due to go.

ATOL bonding does not protect you if you book a flight only direct with an airline, book just accommodation or self package!

How to check you’re covered - Check brochures and websites for the ATOL logo and licence number then check the license number against the CAA's ATOL license checker

Spice Holidays has its own ATOL licence number 9046. All air inclusive holidays featured on the Spice website are ATOL bonded either under the Spice ATOL or where Spice acts as Agent under the specific holiday tour operators ATOL license. The ATOL license relevant to each holiday is clearly indicated in each holidays information.
