Overview
Another of our hugely popular barn weekends - we've re-booked the old Spice Favourite Hornby Laithe for the bonfire weekend. The owner Neil will build a big bonfire ready for our arrival and so we have a traditional bonfire party on the Saturday night!
The barn weekends are always popular and need no introductions, however, if you’re one of our recent new members and you like the outdoors then this really is a great weekend to book. It can sell really, really quickly so get your booking in now so you’re not disappointed. Bunk barns are very civilised – no hay on the floor here! They are similar accommodation to self catering youth hostels.
You'll all be expected to muck in and help with your share of cooking and cleaning. Breakfast is included in the weekend. There’ll be the usual mixture of walks and tea shop trips happening as well as other activities. On Friday evening we have the option to eat in the local pub where they have reserved the dining room for our exclusive use, and can have a party in the separate barn afterwards. On Saturday we’ll have our big bonfire party – we’ll provide the fire (& matches!!) & put on a big pot of stew. You just need to bring an odd tipple or two & your sparklers! We can party until late in the separate barn on this one so those that want to get some sleep will not be disturbed.
The great thing about these weekends is that you don’t have to go home after a long day in the countryside. If you’ve never been on a barn weekend before, do give it a go - it's worth it. If you have been before you’ll know how popular it is and we've managed to squeeze the price even lower this time so get those bookings in quick if you want to join us.

The walks:
Martin will be leading the walks on Saturday and Sunday. Please ensure you have adequate refreshments (provided, but make your own packed lunch), appropriate clothing & footwear.
Saturday walk at 10:30am
From the bunk barn we will head towards Stainforth Village, then cross the Old Pack Horse Bridge to view (hopefully) the salmon leaping up Stainforth Force.
We will then follow the River Ribble (expect it to be muddy) to Langcliffe Locks where we will join the road for a short distance towards Giggleswick.
There will then be a steep climb to go round the quarry, which should afford some fine views along Ribblesdale towards Pen-y-ghent, and on to the top of Giggleswick Scar. Along the Scar we will pass various cave, not least of which is Kinsey Cave (a Scheduled Ancient Monument where a number of archaeological remains have been excavated). We will also pass Schoolboy’s Tower, which gets its name from the tradition of graduating students from Giggleswick School placing rocks on the cairn to celebrate the end of their time at school.
From here we cut across open moorland to the village of Feizor, where there is a chance to visit Elaine’s Tea Rooms ( https://www.elainestearooms.com/ ).After a well-earned rest there is another steep climb over Smearsett Scar back to Stainforth village where the Craven Heifer awaits, or return to the bunk barn to freshen up.
Distance: 10 miles
Boots and decent waterproofs are a must; gaiters are definitely worth wearing.
Sunday walk after we have finished clearing up (around 11am)
From the bunk barn to Stainforth village and on to Catrigg Force waterfall. Along to Winskill and down to Langcliffe. The plan is to go back to the bunk barn along to the lime kilns and Stainforth Tunnel.
This is about 4 miles ish and for anyone that hasn’t been to Stainforth Foss we can add that on at the end for an extra mile if we want to try and see the salmon again!
Rugby Union: For those that want to watch the Rugby World Cup final, we'll be showing it on the TV in the lounge at 9am on Saturday morning.

Extras
Eat in the pub or bring your own food for Friday night. The Craven Heifer have booked out their dining room for our exclusive use with a special menu - order by 8:30pm and pay on the night. Bring your own fireworks for the bonfire party and any drinks for afterwards!

Hornby Laithe Bunkhouse Barn is simple, yet comfortable accommodation in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Converted from original farm buildings, the Bunkhouse occupies a secluded position within easy walking distance of both Stainforth and Settle.
The rooms are a mixture of sizes with a couple of small rooms for two people (primarily allocated to couples), but mainly dormitory style ones with bunk beds. You need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. The rooms are small but this is reflected in the price. There are common rooms with a separate recreational area in its own building with pool table, table football, air hockey and table tennis.

Brilliant weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole event.
The Hornby Lathe Bonfire Weekend was a great success, and everyone got on so well with each other. The walks were arranged to suit most abilities and modified when the weather changed, which suited everyone.There was so much food provided and left over, we could have stayed another day, which would have suited me fine.
Food on Saturday night was excellent and the group of people were very friendly.
It's a great, fun weekend with a good combination of walking and social aspect. Lauren made us feel very welcome and looked after us fantastically well. It's the third time I've been on this event and Lauren was the best host!
This was a great weekend and nice to have a separate building with games room for socialising and music without disturbing people who wanted to go to bed early. Craven Heifer pub in Stainforth is well worth a visit for the beer and food!
