This 8 mile walk shows Warwickshire off at its tranquil best. The route is mainly flat, with the occasional small gentle incline that is rewarded with fine views to the far distance in all directions.

We start by walking through the old part of Welford that is hidden from passers by, thatched cottages and the old stone church setting the scene for our day out. We soon join the river Avon and follow it downstream past swans and fishermen to a chorus of birdlife whilst eventually arriving at the hamlet of Barton, where we will take a break at the aptly named Cottage of all Comforts inn. Refreshed, we head onto the Heart of England way gaining a little altitude to be reward with fine views on all points of the compass.

The route then passes into the Heart of England woodland project, providing numerous new routes and is likely to become a major tourist attraction in the next 20 years. One of the people who inspired this project, the poet Felix Dennis is commemorated by a striking bronze statue with several inscriptions of his numerous amusing works. Shortly afterwards, we will arrive at the village of Dorsington, which could easily be mistaken for a film set. Every building shows English architecture off at its best, all clustered around the delightful church by the village green.

A short stroll across open fields brings us to the edge of Welford and we will pass through the village to return to the Four Alls inn, where we can relax with drinks or food in a perfect setting by the river Avon. It is likely that the walk will take 4 hours.

Those looking for further adventure may like to extend their day in this gorgeous part of Warwickshire with a visit to Anne Hathaway’s cottage in nearby Shottery or perhaps head into Stratford. Your guide will be happy to give you directions.

The route is suitable for well behaved dogs and owners.
