The house is right on the doorstep of the North York Moors National Park which provides a varied backdrop for your walking or sightseeing, from heather-clad moors and green valleys to bracing cliff-top paths and the bustling harbour town of Whitby. The bedrooms all have their individual layout and character, as befits a historic building, and are located in the main house. In your room you’ll find a TV with digital radio, hair dryer, towels and tea and coffee making facilities. The public rooms at Larpool Hall reflect the historic character of the house. There’s a dining room, large lounge and a licensed bar, open throughout your stay, which opens out onto the terrace. The boot and drying room is available to store your boots and to dry wet outdoor clothing. WiFi is accessible in all public areas of the house. And to confirm you are having a true get away from it all you’ll find, due to the area in which the house is located, the mobile phone signal is patchy! Yay hey!

The hotel prides itself on the quality of its food, using local produce wherever possible. The wide choice at breakfast includes locally produced sausages, eggs & bacon and you’ll find a range of home-baked goods amongst the choices for our famous self-select picnic lunches. Dinner is the social highlight of the day, offering three courses with plenty of choice. This might include locally caught fish, Goathland Fells lamb or locally made ice cream. With your meal, enjoy a drink from the bar which offers a range of wines and local beers. There’s a vegetarian option at all meals and they are happy to cater for gluten-free diets. For this and any other dietary requirements, please speak to the House Manager on your arrival.

To allow you to choose a walk that suits you best, we will provide a minimum of two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On both days there will be a harder walk of 10-14 miles with 1000+ft of ascent (please be realistic about your level of fitness and join the right walk for you, after all it should be about pleasure at the end of the day) and a gentler walk of 8-9 miles with less ascent. All walks are weather dependent and own transport may be taken to the walk starts.

You MUST have:

• Walking boots

• A Water bottle (minimum 1 litre)

• A Rucksack with a plastic liner

• Waterproofs: jacket and trousers

• A Warm hat

• Warm gloves (not leather)

• Base layer: (thin thermal or warm T-shirt. Best not to be cotton as it gets cold when wet)

• Over layer: (warm sweater or fleece)

• Extra layer: warm top for when cold (eg. when stopped for lunch)

• Comfortable walking trousers (not jeans as they are too cold & heavy when wet)

• Personal Medication

• A face covering and hand sanitiser

• Smart casual clothes for the evening.

On one day we explore the fantastic Heritage coastline to the north of Whitby. Along the way we walk above dramatic towering sea cliffs, as the waves lap (or crash!) below us, which are interspersed with delightful sandy bays! For the hard walk we will all be leaving the hotel heading to the Olde Worlde fishing village of Staithes for a truly memorable coastal walk along the heritage coast. After leaving the beautiful village behind the path reaches upwards onto the towering cliff top path and rewards you with a tremendous sea vista. The route, part of the Cleveland Way, passes through the idyllic Runswick Bay, before you cross the next headland to Sands End and the welcome sight of Whitby. For the moderate walk we will alight from the bus at Runswick bay, this walk will follow part of the longer walk, but at a more relaxed pace! We descend into the historic village port, before following the shore path along the coastal path and then ascending onto the cliff top path. This delightful route around the headland provides delightful sea vistas before we get to Sands End where there’s time for tea before the walk back to the hotel in Whitby.

The other day we will discover the Heritage coastline to the south of Whitby. Alighting from the coach, both routes will be linear and walk back along the coast to Whitby town. For the hard walk the day will begin with a lovely walk that follows one of the finest sections of coastline in England. Soon we pass into the historic and picturesque village of Robin Hoods Bay, where we may have time to explore the ‘olde world’ fishing village of Robin Hoods Bay complete with quaint shops, pubs, cafes and wonderful sea vistas. Afterwards we shall continue back along the coastline to Whitby. For the moderate walkers again we have few, if any, better or more rewarding coastal walks on our programme than this one! Starting at the village of Hawsker we will begin with a very sociable and gentle stroll along the old railway line. The route meanders its way down to the coast and into Robin Hoods Bay, where I am sure we will be pausing for refreshments! Once suitably satisfied, the tootle continues northwards on the Cleveland Way, the path hugging the coastline and rewarding the walkers with lovely views into many hidden bays before we eventually pop out at Whitby Abbey.

By Car:

Most guests approach Whitby via the A171 from Teeside or the A169 from Malton and Pickering which joins the A171. After this roundabout and as you approach Whitby cross another roundabout then turn right at the traffic lights signposted to Scarborough. Cross the bridge over the River Esk then take the next right into Larpool Lane. Towards the top of the hill take the narrowing road on the left, following signs to Larpool Hall, which is directly ahead of you.

BY TRAIN:

BY TAXI:

The 2 mile journey from Whitby station takes approximately 10 minutes, with a cost of around £6 per 4 seat taxi. The 21 mile journey from Scarborough rail station takes approximately 40 minutes, with a cost of around £30 per 4 seat taxi. Please note these are 2019 prices relevant to a 4-seat taxi and should only be taken as a guide. 8-seat taxis are also available at a higher rate. BY BUS:
