Overview
This is one of our personal favourites in the HF portfolio of walking centres. If you have visited one before you will know their locations are excellent for walkers and their meals and picnic lunches are legendary. Needless to say, HF Derwent Bank is no different, but the waterside frontage adds a unique and wonderful charm of its own. Plus, we’re just on the outskirts of Keswick so you know we have all the components for a wonderful bank holiday weekend. Add to this the great walking days planned that take in some of the greatest Lakeland classics and we will experience everything the north Lakes has to offer. For the harder walkers it’s the BIG THREE of Blencathra, Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike with it’s Newlands Round for trimmings. For the moderate there’s also beautiful peaks, views and the picturesque lakes of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. Finally, on top of all this there are the friendly villages of Braithwaite, Threkeld , Portinscale and the bustling market town of Keswick with their individual shops, cafes and pubs, and we are in for a ideal Bank Holiday Weekend. A little piece of heaven here on earth!

Location & Itinerary
To allow you to choose a walk that suits you best, we will provide a minimum of two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On both days there will be a harder walk of 10-12 miles with 3,000ft of ascent (please be realistic about your level of fitness and join the right walk for you, after all it is all about pleasure at the end of day) and a more moderate walk of 7-9 miles with less ascent. All walks are weather dependent and own transport or coaches may be taken to the walk starts.
Travel & Stay
Situated in a quiet and peaceful location on the waterfront, about 30 minutes’ walk from the centre of Keswick, HF Derwent Bank is a period Country House that caters exclusively for walkers from all around the world. It creates an atmosphere which is all a far cry from the anonymity of a conventional hotel. It prides itself on friendly service of the highest standard. Fresh ingredients are carefully chosen to provide an excellent local and international cuisine and vegetarian options, for which they are renowned, are available at all times. Derwent Bank sits in extensive gardens with a sloping lawn down to the lake jetty. Outside there is a formal garden, a putting green and croquet lawn. Tailored to walkers and outdoor enthusiasts and have excellent boot and drying rooms, laundry facilities and a mini-shop for essentials such as maps, postcards and toiletries. At Derwent Bank there is a large, comfortable lounge, an attractive dining room and a welcoming bar stocking local beer. The conservatory is particularly attractive and has superb views of the lake and the surrounding fells. There is also a games room with table tennis and Nintendo Wii. Free internet access is offered on a dedicated PC and Wi-Fi is also available in some public rooms.

By Car: Take the M6 to Junction 40. Follow signs for the A66, Keswick and Workington. For those with satellite navigation, enter the postcode CA12 5TY and town Portinscale if required. From Penrith: take the A66 towards Cockermouth. One mile beyond the roundabout to Keswick and 200 yards beyond the B5289 turning, turn left off the A66 signposted to Portinscale, Grange and the Newlands Valley. Derwent Bank (not Derwentwater Hotel) is approx. ½ a mile along this road on the left after the Derwentwater Marina and before Nicol End Marina. Look out for our sign.
From Kendal: take the A591 to Keswick. To avoid the town centre, turn right following signs to the A66 and Cockermouth, then follow the directions as above.
NB: If you get to the Nichol End marina you have just gone a bit too far.
Car parking: Parking is available in the grounds. No responsibility can be accepted for loss or damage to guests’ property or vehicles. We advise not to leave valuables in cars.
By Rail: The nearest train station to Derwent Bank is at Penrith. For train times and general rail enquiries visit www.nationalrail.co.uk or call 03457 484950. If you are phoning from outside the UK call +44 20 7278 5240. The 20-mile journey from Penrith Station takes approximately 40 minutes.
Our station transfers: We offer a reduced-price transfer between Penrith railway station and Derwent Bank every Friday and Monday. The pickup is at 4.50pm from Penrith railway station. On departure day the transfer will get you back to Penrith station by 9.50am. The transfer is £18 return, but a place must be reserved at least 14 days in advance by calling our Holiday Services team on 020 8732 1220.
Station transfer by taxi: If you can’t meet our station transfer, you can arrange your own taxi. We have negotiated a preferential rate with Davies Taxis for all pre-booked journeys of £38 per taxi. (Please note - taxis that are not pre-booked can be considerably more expensive at Penrith railway station). They will arrange shared taxis wherever possible. Station transfers by bus: The X5 and X4 buses run approximately every hour from Penrith railway station to Keswick. Alight at Booths supermarket and complete the final 2 miles of your journey by taxi. You can pre book Davies Taxis at the preferential rate of £6 per taxi.
