Urban Ramble: Around Birmingham Airport
Overview
Event going ahead: Please be assured that this event can go ahead, From the 29th March we can have groups on outdoor activities.
This turned out to be such a cracking route when we walked it last time that we’re doing it again!.
As we’re using the Greenways Map and using hidden walking spaces we have called this an urban ramble but it is surprisingly green! Our circular route which goes right around Birmingham International Airport using footpaths, cycle ways and pavements.
It’s a gentle and flat 8 mile route but we’re never more than half a mile away from the airport runway, so don’t expect peace and quiet! But if you love the smell of jet fuel, roar of engines and seeing aircraft taking off and landing at very close quarters (including the huge A380!) the airport adds an exciting backdrop to an unusual walk.
I think you will also be surprised by some of the nature, birdlife and green spaces that thrive in the shadow of our busy international airport, enjoying the privacy that it affords.
The route is flat and varied, including paths through country parks, nature reserves and by golf courses as well as a little use of cycle ways and walkways beside main roads in order to complete the circuit. On our way we’ll discover the site of a grand country house, a home for retired greyhounds, several hidden waterways that flow right through or under the airport and, of course, we’ll experience the thrill of standing at each end of the runway with aircraft just above our heads! Expect a bit of everything and you won’t be disappointed.
We’ve got the chance of a pub stop for a drink at the Arden Oak in Sheldon and expect to be back at the start before 4pm.
Location & Itinerary
We meet at the main entrance of Birmingham International Railway Station (glass area at bottom of escalators on track side – not car park side - of road).
You can park at Birmingham International Station, but it is fairly expensive (around £10 for the day), so it may make more sense to come in by train, perhaps leaving the car at a station that has free parking.
- or you could of course fly in!
