Overview

Another of our Spice opportunities to try something new - playing in a steel band!

Everyone must have seen these bands, which originated in the Caribbean, banging out their traditional calypsos at the West Indian cricket matches or at the Notting Hill or Handsworth Carnivals, well now it's your turn.

Your instructor for the workshop is Clive Scott, one of the UK’S leading Steel Drum experts. Having over 40 years experience, Clive makes, tunes, plays and teaches Steel Drums all over the UK.

By the time you've finished you should be able to manage at least one tune, who knows, we may even have our own Spice Calypso

Clive has a great sense of humour which made the session.

The event was very good value for money. The instructor was incredibly friendly and fun. Overall a fun, good value event which Id book again if I was available.

Brilliant! When is the next one planned for??

The Steel Band Workshop was amazing and a dream come true. Our instructor Clive was fantastic, really patient and did not mind showing us the notes over and over again. Everyone was enthusiastic and really got into the spirit. When we knew what the tune was, we actually produced quite a nice sound, and I was really quite proud of what we managed to achieve, in such a short time. I would definitely recommend this one. Thank You for a great night.

This was a fabulous night. Clive was such an entertaining host, full of energy and enthusiasm. I couldn’t believe he could get 8 novices making an identifiable sound. A lot of fun!

Amazing event, great to see you, was lovely to play the drums on a rainy night. :)

• What an absolute blast last night - had a great time and it was a wish come true! Thanks for organising another great event - Clive was entertaining & engaging and I'm already looking forward to next time!

• The Steel band Workshop was great fun.  The guy taking the class was excellent, giving us a bit of the background history, explaining how the drums are made and identifying the different drums that make up a Steel band orchestra. He then introduced us to our first few simple chords. The group responded well to his tuition and amazingly when we all played our parts together we were able to keep in time and produce a recognisable tune!

As the tunes became more complex we had to concentrate hard to remember the notes and the timing. Mistakes were made, but we were all encouraged to try again and, with our leader's support, we produced some brilliant sounds. I was astounded by the progress we made in such a relatively short space of time. To my ears we sounded quite professional!

I would definitely recommend this session to anyone interested. It was great fun and informative.

●Thoroughly enjoyed the steel band workshop. Clive was so patient with us and didn't mind showing us the notes over and over again. The write up matched the event. I thought it was really good value for money as music lessons are pretty expensive and we had 2 hours. I'd definitely recommend this event and would love a follow up to it as I'm thinking about having steel drum lessons as I enjoyed it so much.

• The Steel band Workshop was a really fun way to spend some free time:-)) After an interesting and informative introduction to how the Steel bands evolved and how they achieved that amazing sound the real fun began. Everyone was enthusiastic and you could not be anything but amazed at the skill of Clive who is able to play each section without stopping to pause:-)) And yes, we did get a couple of tunes out, much to the amazement of all taking part which gave a great feeling of personal satisfaction. In all, this is a fun event, good value and recommended as one to try.
