Overview

It was the Turin Olympics in 2006 which really brought this area into focus, although Sauze d'Oulx, just an hour from Turin, and right at the beginning of the “Via Lattea” resort complex, had for some time been a fixture for British skiers. Hosting the Olympics meant the ski area was significantly upgraded, with major improvements in snowmaking facilities underpinning an already reliable snow record, and several new high-speed lifts were constructed to streamline circulation around the area.

There are wonderful long runs and really impressive views from the slopes on Mount Motta at 2823m, with wide open spaces above the tree-line as well as picturesque wooded runs below. The long chain of linked resorts, with 400km of pistes, gives skiers and boarders a wonderful opportunity to travel from resort to resort, ending up crossing the border with France and skiing into Montgenèvre (a return trip that takes all day – but it’s a great feeling of satisfaction to ski into another country!). En route you’ll pass through the Olympic hub of Sestriere-Cesana-Sansicario (which hosted all the Alpine events) – which you’ll no doubt want to explore before moving on to Claviere and into the French end of the system.

Sauze d'Oulx in the Milky Way ski area is a vibrant resort with a lively après scene that has long appealed to British visitors. The resort offers plentiful tree-lined skiing and wide open, cruising that is ideal for intermediate skiers and improving beginners. The extensive lift system has made access to the 400km of on-piste skiing simple and efficient.

The Sauze pistes are spread across a north and west facing, snow bowl which is great at preserving snow conditions, making the resort perfect for sampling powder skiing. A definite highlight is the 1300m descent from the top of Monte Fraiteve, skiing all the way to the valley floor at Jovenceaux.

Beyond Sauze the Milky Way ski area extends all the way to the high altitude resort of Sestriere, past Cesana towards the charming village of Claviere and across the French border to the iconic resort of Montgenèvre. The Milky Way offers a huge variety of skiing and snowboarding, perfect for the discerning wintersports enthusiast.

As well as excellent skiing, the old centre of the mountain village, with its cobbled streets, offers an attractive escape from the mountain when the ski legs start to get sore. This bustling resort is home to a great variety of pubs, bars, and restaurants all of which contribute to the lively, welcoming atmosphere.

Sauze’s reputation for offering reasonably priced food and drink is justified and has helped cement its reputation as a popular après destination. And the fabulous range of restaurants and pizzerias, both on and off the mountain, offer delicious Italian food that caters for all tastes.

Beginners skiing and snowboarding in Sauze d’Oulx

Beginners should head up the mountain to Sportinia, which despite an abundance of red runs, provides many opportunities to ski wide, open pistes ideal for building your confidence. Sportinia is also the location of the ski school meeting place and the sunny, sheltered nursery slope is ideal for complete beginners.

After just a few day’s tuition you could be enjoying the runs through the woods back to the village. The number 30 from the top of the Sportina chair to the bottom of the Clotes chairlift is a particulary pleasant blue run.

Intermediates skiing and snowboarding in Sauze d’Oulx

Sauze d’Oulx is an exceptional resort for intermediate skiers. There is a fantastic range of cruising terrain ideal for improving your technique and building your confidence. As a result, snowboarding is also a popular past time. We like to head up to the top of the Moncrons where the red pistes are generally less crowded.

Intermediate skiers can cover significant distances and there is varied skiing, both above and below the tree line. You can easily access the three main areas of Clotes, Sportinia and Genevris using the interlinking lifts. It is also simple to ski to Sestriere and the enjoyable runs of Sansicario.

Travelling to Montgenevre, across the Italian/French boarder is a great day trip. The French resort is also a part of the Milky Way area and well worth a visit.

Advanced skiing and snowboarding in Sauze d’Oulx

Our favourite piste on the mountain is the Olimpico. Take the chairlift to the top of Mount Fraiteve, from here a mixture of red and black piste drops all the way into Sansicario village. This long and challenging run will really put your stamina to the test!

The black Malafosse is another exciting run where the narrow piste requires excellent control. Runs on this side of the mountain generally offer longer descents, giving advanced skiers and boarders something to get their teeth into.

The Milky Way area also provides several opportunities to ski off-piste. Free riders can head to the Moncrons, which has possibly the best powder conditions on the mountain. Montgenevre, across the French border, has an excellent reputation for its off-piste with some iconic routes.

Advanced skiers will enjoy neighbouring Sestriere too. The higher resort offers several steep, challenging blacks as well as dedicated mogul fields.

Freestyle and terrain parks in Sauze d’Oulx

Sauze hosted the freestyle competitions during the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. A small terrain park is located above Sportinia and you can find another park in the neighbouring resort of Sansicario.
