Overview

It was the Turin Olympics in 2006 which really brought this area into focus, although Sauze d'Oulx, just an hour from Turin, and right at the beginning of the “Via Lattea” resort complex, had for some time been a fixture for British skiers. Hosting the Olympics meant the ski area was significantly upgraded, with major improvements in snowmaking facilities underpinning an already reliable snow record, and several new high-speed lifts were constructed to streamline circulation around the area.

There are wonderful long runs and really impressive views from the slopes on Mount Motta at 2823m, with wide open spaces above the tree-line as well as picturesque wooded runs below. The long chain of linked resorts, with 400km of pistes, gives skiers and boarders a wonderful opportunity to travel from resort to resort, ending up crossing the border with France and skiing into Montgenèvre (a return trip that takes all day – but it’s a great feeling of satisfaction to ski into another country!). En route you’ll pass through the Olympic hub of Sestriere-Cesana-Sansicario (which hosted all the Alpine events) – which you’ll no doubt want to explore before moving on to Claviere and into the French end of the system.

Sestriere is arguably Europe’s first purpose-built resort – it was developed specifically for winter sports by Fiat’s Giovanni Agnelli in the 1930s. There’s a lot of skiing to explore in the vicinity, but if you’re continuing towards Montgenèvre, unless you are determined to have lunch in France, try stopping at Clavierejust before you cross the border. It’s cheaper than France and worth the visit just for the "Bombardinos" (coffee with brandy and advocaat). Sestriere, at 2035m, is the highest resort in the Milky Way set-up. Sauze d'Oulx, with its charmingly rustic old mountain village centre, has a good variety of slopes, some attractively gladed, and an equally eclectic choice of pubs, bars and restaurants: the après-ski here is not dull!

Sitting at the very heart of The Milky Way ski area in Italy, Sestriere and nearby Borgata is the perfect home base for those of us who truly love the mountains. Whether you’re a complete beginner, or a seasoned expert, The Milky Way ski area truly has something for us all!

A purpose built resort that was constructed in the 1930s (and extended again in 2006 to host the Turin Winter Olympics) Sestriere has a modern and trendy feel to it, with a lively après ski crowd that congregates in the popular bars and pubs around the town when the lifts close.

Sestriere is also home to the Tabata night club, which claims to be one of the biggest and the best that the Alps has to offer!

Sitting amongst 400km of pistes, there is plenty of skiing and snowboarding to be had in Sestriere and beyond, joining the pistes over at Sauze d’Oulx, Claviere and Montgenvreover the border in France.

 Sestriere for beginners

Some good nursery slopes for beginners sit directly beside Sestriere, in front of the Scuola Nazionale Sci and are serviced by drag lifts Baby1 and Baby2 (however these are not free and you will need a lift pass). Once you feel ready to progress, the whole Milky Way ski area is your oyster! Starting in the local area, the long piste down to Borgata is recommended, before heading over to Sauze d’Oulx.

 Sestriere for intermediates

The whole of the Milky Way sits on the doorstep of Sestriere, with 400km pistes, and a majority of them being easy cruising blues, and slightly more challenging reds. In the immediate Sestriere area, Motta is a good choice for getting back on your ski legs, but as you travel further afield, you’ll find plenty of runs that both sit within your comfort zone as well as push you further. One excursion that may interest you is a day trip over the border to ski in French Montgenevre, which offers some further mileage as well as an exciting day trip out.

 Sestriere for advanced

There are 40 black pistes across the Milky Way ski area, with plenty more opportunities to explore some off-piste areas. For those seeking an adventure, there is heli-skiing available in the resort which your rep can organise for you.

 Freestyle and terrain parks

The freestyle park in Sestrieere is located 300 metres to the left of the Cit Rock lift, and next to button lift 27. For those ambitious skiers and snowboarders who want to go a little further, there are 5 freestyle and terrain parks across the whole Milky Way ski area.
