Discover the delights of Northern Spain at this Spice Escapes exclusive destination

The Northern coast isn’t the typical Spain that everyone imagines. The weather isn’t as predictable as the Mediterranean South but this area has so much to offer. Cantabria is a place where nature excels in expressing herself. The seasons are no exception - cold winters and warm summers. When the sun shines in Cantabria its hot. When it rains in Cantabria it pours. Your hotel (Agara) is set in the mountains in the natural park of Cabuerniga.

This is going to be a weekend of great scenery, great food and wine and as much or as little activity as you wish. After a day out immersed in the countryside we will be back to a log fire, wine and tapas and stories to recount of the days events. We look forward to spoling you !

Agara

Location & Itinerary

Things to do

Agara has its own minibus and we will be out and about every day, so transport is all provided. The final itinerary will depend on the weather forecast but there are local walks, local cycles, beautiful unspoilt beaches to visit and lots of highly authentic local villages and fishing ports to explore.

The area is a mecca for walking and cycling. The house has a number of bikes (enough that you should be able to find one that suits you) and helmets. If you enjoy walking then you will be in your element. We will be walking the ancient beech forests as well as the footpaths above the valley. As well as guided walking there are a number of self guided routes available and as any ardent walker knows, if you are tackling longer routes you will need boots and all other sensible equipment for a days walking in changeable weather. The detail and difficulty of what we do every day will depend completely on what the group might like and there is flexibility, So if you decide you would prefer to stay in for an afternoon reading, then this is fine too.

As well as the stunning beaches (see the gallery) which are set in the natural park of Oyambre there are the villages of Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera 25 minutes drive away. Comillas is famous for its huge university buildings built on the cliff and for its “Capricho de Gaudi” (a building built by the famous architect Antonio Gaudi who built mostly in Barcelona). San Vicente is a great place to sample fish at one of the many restaurants on the quay. There are also street markets to visit in both towns. Further afield Santander is 50 minutes away by car with its many beaches, restaurants and galleries.

Food & Meals

The first thing to say is that you will be eating very well. Lots for breakfast with choices of eggs or porridge and home made marmalade on toast. Lunch is probably out somewhere, and then back to Agara for a hearty dinner with plenty of wine and a roaring log fire! Also, there will be complimentary tea/coffee available for you to help yourself to and every afternoon there will be a delicious cake from a local bakery to share, depending where we are. Locally sourced spring water will be available in the house so you won’t need to worry about getting bottled water unless you really want to. Finally local wine, beer and spirits will be available between 6-12pm every day (we will ask your favourite tipple before you travel to make sure we are well stocked!); these drinks will also be available at other times for a small charge and premium brands will also be available at any time for a charge.

The provisional evening menu includes roast turkey, curry, slow cooked lamb and roasted pumpkin. There will be fresh fish too somewhere along the way...

Agara

Travel & Stay

Agara

‘Agara’ is translated as Home in sanskrit . Your accommodation is a large house that was formerly used as a restaurant and mountain hotel but has recently been renovated. It has completely new electrical and bathroom installations and a new kitchen. Despite the physical improvements to bring the house up to modern standards the owners have retained the character of the house. This is a chance for a relaxing break where you can immerse yourself in the local area and culture. There are no bars and nightclubs on the doorstep, but we will be out and about every day visiting the beach (30 minutes away) the market at Cabezon de la Sal as well as the mountains themselves.

There are twelve bedrooms and eight bathrooms; four rooms have bathrooms en-suite and the rest share the remaining four. There is a small supplement for an en suite room.

All rooms will accommodate 2 people but we are using them all for sole occupancy; we are not offering a room share service on this trip but f you would like to share with a friend who has booked please let us know and we can accommodate this with a £20 reduction per person.
