Solihull book Club - Online
Overview
We have 2 thriving Book Clubs in Spice. One in Sutton that serves the north of our area and one in Solihull that serves the south of the West Midlands.
This event is run by our member Alex Ajao as a volunteer from a lovely café in Olton.
The Format: each month we discuss a set book that we have read in preparation.
The conversation will be led by our volunteer, Alex Ajao, but is very informal. If you haven’t read the book and just want to come along for a chat and to see what goes on, then please feel free to!
Book Aid International: A voluntary collection is taken each month which we will send to Book Aid International who send books to schools and libraries in third world countries..
Preparation: You will need to have read each book beforehand (hence the advance notices). We often are able to choose books that are on offer at WH Smith and www.amazon.com or try your local library. Audio books are popular too!
The Books:
20th September - Elegance of a Hedgehog - Muriel Barberry - The life of a concierge whose deliberately concealed intelligence is uncovered by an unstable but intellectually precocious girl
18th October – Animal – Lisa Taddeo – A woman hunts down the traumas of her past
15th November –The Cellist of Sarajevo – Steven Galloway – The story of three people trying to survive in a city rife with fear, and the sorrowful cellist that played undaunted in their midst
20th December – The Salt Path – Raynor Winn – Uplifting true story about a couple who lost everything and embarked on a journey across the windswept Southwest coastline
17th January 2022 – The Book Thief – Marcus Suzak – The horrors of WW2, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books in Nazi Germany and sharing them with others, a young Jewish girl is protected in her home by her parents
21st February 2022 – The Midnight Library – Matt Haig – Between life and death there is a library, and within that library the shelves go on forever.
Host & Everything Else
● “I really enjoyed the book club, the venue is really friendly and the cafe sells a variety of snacks that caters for gluten free, vegetarian and we were welcome to bring our own drinks if we wanted to, including alcohol! The group decided on the next book, and I'm looking forward to the next one”
● “I really enjoyed this month's bookclub. A brilliant choice of book - I really enjoyed reading it. The host was lovely and welcoming and it was great fun discussing the book. The venue was a lovely little coffee shop - a great place to meet up”
● “Really enjoyed attending the Spice Solihull Book Club on 9th October in Olton. The book chosen for that evening, ‘Sarah’s Key’ was a tremendous selection and certainly gave us plenty to discuss, which was well chaired by Alex who brought questions to start the discussion. The venue the ‘Happy Heart Cafe’ is lovely and relaxed and there was a choice of hot drinks and cakes/biscuits on offer to buy at the start of the evening. Looking forward to the next night, with good company and another interesting book choice in ‘The keeper of lost things’ to discuss, which I am enjoying reading at present”
