Overview

What have the Romans ever done for us…those are the iconic words from Monty Python.

Well quite a lot actually…Caesar, Augustus, Cicero, Tacitus, The Colosseum, Amphitheatre, Aqueductum, Baths, Fountains, Roads, Legions, Churches, Popes, Obeliscums, Italian Gardens, Borgia, Colonna, Barberini, Michelangelo, Bernini, Borromini and on and on ….

It is fair to say that the ancient Romans probably did pinch a few ideas from the Greeks; developing these ideas making Rome one of the most impressive organised empire’s possibly the world has ever seen!

How better to see this ancient eternal city through the eyes of a local Roman with WingsItlay, absorbing and exploring everyday life and culture and visiting areas of Rome often not necessarily seen by her many visitors.

There are always new places to discover and explore even if you are Roman, or have visited the city before! If you are looking for an informal approach to Rome, experiencing local city life through the eyes of a native Roman then this is the experience and adventure for you. Perhaps you will even find a distant relative, something in your past which links you back to Rome, apparently the theory is that many Europeans have a direct bloodline between themselves and Julius Caesar; surprisingly some say 80% could have reason to call the Roman Commander “Uncle Caesar”!!!!

Claire and Andrea's holidays are very popular with people who like to discover new countries but prefer to do so at a relaxed pace and with plenty of time dedicated to good food, wine and conviviality in between. There is a fair degree of flexibility and spontaneity rather than a rigid daily schedule. If you are looking for a packed programme of heavyweight cultural discoveries, you might find this approach a little too laid back for you.

Please also be aware that while Rome is quite compact there will be quite a bit of walking on this holiday to allow you to get right in amongst things and really experience true Rome.

Location & Itinerary

What’s in Store!

During your days in Rome, this adventure focuses on making you aware of how Roman history is not only present today in every day Roman life, but its strong past over the centuries with her people, her empire and how all of this still co-exists today within the city.

Whilst the Romans perhaps have seen everything over time, they are always ready and waiting to see whatever the future may bring, and of course they are looking forward to welcoming Spice very soon!

As you wander through the city with your host Andrea Dal Moro, its array of ancient ruins, seeing marvels and the wealth of what Rome has to offer, you will primarily visit and focus during your stay on the following areas.

- Pantheon

- Piazza Navona

- Campo de' Fiori

- Spanish Steps

- Ancient Roman Community “Roman Ghetto”, which is over 2,000 years old.

- Tivoli

Also included is a visit and entrance to Villa Adriana, built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, granting him time to have a well-deserved break from city life, and Tivoli which is a small village outside Rome. Here you will also visit the famous “Villa d'Este” perhaps some noble ancient families thought of this Villa as a Renaissance version of a modern-day amusement park!

“When in Rome” - you will have the opportunity to eat and drink the Roman way, sampling many Roman seasonal dishes such as Carciofi all Giudea, local Roman wines, and much more.

As often what counts with WingsItaly it’s more the moment and more what you live and experience locally than what perhaps you see. Hopefully during this experience you will have the opportunity to be emerged into the Roman life style, and curiously in Latin, the word “Roma” read backwards, Amor, - Love!

What else is there to say about Rome that has not already been said, so now is the time to experience this eternal city, not challenging her, but visiting her with curiosity and respect. Please note, given the vast volume of art, architecture, history and more, it is impossible to see and experience the entirety of Rome and perhaps this is why many visitors return time and time again.

If you wish to experience the more well-known tourist attractions outside of the planned itinerary with an official tourist guide then your hosts Wingsitaly, or the hotel reception can provide advice and guidance, please note this will be at your own expense. A more detailed programme of visits a will be available in February 2022 which will allow you to book in advance independent visits to the more popular attractions.

Continental breakfast is typically continental style and there is a lounge, a bar and an outside terrace with sun loungers, tables and umbrellas. Please note all room allocation is managed by the hotel and room allocation is allocated on arrival, some rooms are smaller than others, different views and please not this is out of our control. Any special requests will be addressed and managed to the best of our ability. This hotel has been chosen mainly for its central location which is extremely close to the area, “Trastevere “.

Trastevere” is a medieval area located on the west bank of the River Tiber and has mainly escaped the grand developments of recent times. It’s a charming, unique place to wander through its narrow streets, or stopping off to eat and or relax with the locals! Trastevere is pronounced (TrasTEVeh-ray) which means ‘over the Tiber'. It has a strong local identity and in the heart of Trastevere is “Piazza di Santa Maria “a pedestrianised square piazza lined with many restaurants, buzzing with Roman city life! Wandering through the many streets you will see plants hanging down from the home terraces, washing hanging out and day to day city living the Roman way. There lots to explore here and don’t worry about getting lost as this area was the home for many years of Andrea your host and as the saying goes “All Roads lead to Rome”!
