Roger's Evening Walk - Bilston Glen Viaduct
Overview
Starting from the site of Loanhead Station, we follow a path around the edge of farmland join Wadingburn Lane. Coming back up the hill, we head in the direction of Lasswade Riding Stables, but then dive down a narrow path which is sandwiched between the grounds of the ruined Mavisbank House and the River North Esk until we eventually emerge at Polton. We
now climb up through Bilston Wood towards the old railway line which ran from Loanhead to Roslin. At this point there is an optional out-and-back section to visit Hewan Bank (thought to be the site of the Third Battle of Roslin in 1302) and Maiden Castle. Joining the old railway line we cross over the Bilston Glen Viaduct with its spectacular views of the glen, and then back to the start.
Location & Itinerary
A circular walk of about 3.25 miles mostly on good paths but with one short very steep section and should take about 1.5 -1.75 hours. The optional section to Hewan Bank and Maiden Castle adds a further 1.5 miles.
