Peak District Walk: Plague village of Eyam
Overview
Starting from the centre of the village of Eyam, famous for isolating itself from the rest of the population when the plague arrived in 1665, we head off to the village of Foolow then Grindlow before traversing under Foolow edge to climb to Bretton.
From this viewpoint we descend into Bretton Clough to Stoke ford where we follow the other side of the valley to the bridleway of Sir William Hill Road leading to the radio mast, a gentle climb over Bole hill and Ladywash Mine leads us to Mompesson’s Well from the plague era where money was left in vinegar for food and goods.
Finally we descend back to the village to explore the cottages with their plaques and the church of St Lawrence which has a magnificent sun dial, a 9th c Saxon cross and a small plague exhibition.

Location & Itinerary
Our Sunday walks are always popular and we go out all weathers and all through the year. All walks in the Peak District need to be classified as moderate due to the terrain. Easier Moderate Walks are generally half day only around 6-8 miles.
Full day or Harder Moderate walks are normally not more than 10-12 miles although sometimes slightly more in summer months.
If you've not done much hill walking recently regardless of your general fitness level, we'd recommend starting off on one of these shorter half day walks, typically of around 6 miles before tackling our slightly more serious full day walks.
