Agara

Location & Itinerary

WalkWise have been out there a number of times and are impressed with what they see. They have produced a fine walking package using mini buses to access the small more remote villages that proliferate in the area. This enchanting area is located in Cantabria in what’s often referred to as ‘green Spain’ due to its unique aspect facing toward the Atlantic coast. The story starts on the coast then makes it’s way into the open foothills, dotted with ancient deciduous woodlands and finally onto the high limestone plateau. All walkers from moderate to hard shall experience a wonderful array of walks at every level and fall in love with this special hidden corner of Spain.

Travel & Stay

agara aerial

‘Agara’ is translated as Home in Sanskrit – your accommodation is a large house that was formerly used as a restaurant but has recently been renovated. It has completely new electrical and bathroom installations and a new kitchen. Despite the physical improvements to bring the house up to modern standards the owners have tried to retain the character of the house. This is a chance for a relaxing break in a home away from home where you can immerse yourself in the local area and culture – you won’t find a choice of bars and nightclubs on your doorstep so if you want a party you’ll have to do it in the house! There are twelve bedrooms and eight bathrooms; four rooms have bathrooms en-suite and the rest share the remaining four. There is a supplement for an en suite room.

Included in your trip is a continental breakfast, light lunches (available if we are at the property or a picnic lunch if on a walk or cycle ride) and evening meal every day that are it’s very seasonal, all homecooked and plentiful. Also, there will be complimentary tea/coffee available for you to help yourself to. Locally sourced spring water will be available in the house, so you won’t need to worry about getting bottled water unless you really want to. Finally local wine, beer and spirits will be available between 6-12pm every day (we will ask your favourite tipple before you travel to make sure we are well stocked!); these drinks will also be available at other times for a small charge and premium brands will also be available at any time for a charge.

Host & Everything Else

With the most sunny hours of the season, June warms up slightly to average minimum and maximum temperatures around 14°C and 24°C.

You need to have many of the same things with you, as you would have for a typical British spring day on the mountains. The following list is a suggestion of what you may wish to bring with you

You MUST have:

  • Walking boots
  • A Water bottle (minimum 1 litre, 2litre is much better)
  • A Rucksack with a plastic liner
  • Waterproofs: jacket and trousers
  • A Warm hat
  • Warm gloves (not leather)
  • Thick walking socks
  • Base layer: (thin thermal or warm T-shirt. Best not to be cotton as it gets cold when wet)
  • Over layer: (warm sweater or fleece)
  • Extra layer: warm top for when cold (e.g. when stopped for lunch)
  • Comfortable walking trousers (not jeans as they are too cold & heavy when wet)
  • Personal Medication
  • A torch for use in the tunnels
  • Smart casual clothes for the evening.
  • T shirts
  • Shorts
  • Swim wear
  • Sun tan lotion
  • Sun glasses

You may wish to bring:

  • Vacuum flask (if you like hot drinks on the hill)
  • Medium size Tupperware container or plastic bag, to put picnic lunch in.
  • Sit mat
  • Lip salve
  • Camera
  • Personal first aid kit
