We’ve visited Northern Italy at New Year a number of times in recent years but our friends at WingsItaly have been looking for something with a change of scenery and atmosphere and with many past travellers expressing a desire to explore new unique Italian places, here it is… Spice Escapes with WingsItaly are delighted to offer this unique adventure for your Italian New Year - Capodanno in Southern Italy’s region of Puglia, known to many as the Heel of the Boot!

This is the first time that WingsItaly have taken Spice Escapes to this region, often not visited by international tourists, however, as always Andrea of WingsItaly lived in this area for many years so knows a thing or two about the region so this will be a great opportunity to experience the culture, richness and the very different landscape to that of Northern Italy .
Claire Dymond of WingsItaly says this area it’s like nowhere else; do as the Italians do and explore Puglia, as to be Italian is one thing, to be Salentino is something else!
This unique adventure not only provides the opportunity to explore new parts of Italy certainly off the tourist track, but the opportunity to see, experience and have fun at this special time of year.
As always, it’s a journey of discovery, new places, new regional foods and seeing REAL ITALY. From its wonderful food…. Olive Oil, Pasta, Bread, Burrata Cheese, Orecchiette Pasta, this region also has the longest flowing coastline of any Italian mainland region, around 800km!
Location & Itinerary
Claire at Wings has informed Spice Escapes that this region is not picture-perfect, it doesn’t attract perfectionists and this is where she believes the beauty and uniqueness lie. The various towns are truly Italian, roads are often lined with scraggly farmland and here there are 60 million olives trees dotted across the landscape, which is in deep contrast to those manicured hills of Tuscany!
Unpaved streets, its rural and as Claire says she has yet to see this elsewhere in Italy, it’s simple and has an unconditional warmth and atmosphere.
If you are looking for a spontaneous adventure set within a real Italian village, eating and drinking where the locals eat, staying in a deluxe hotel, eating pasta al dente, Pasta Nonna, rustic food, gooey cheeses and local wines, experiencing Puglia’s vibrant and rich culture, glistening coastlines, fairytale villages, cave dwellings, slow living …. All with a native Italian, then this is for you!
Here's what to expect
28th December 2022 Arrival. Meet and greet and private transfer to your hotel. Check in, relax. then it’s your first evening meal , which will include a traditional Puglia Italian meal, choice of meals, accompanied by local Puglia wines. After your evening meal, maybe a few nightcaps in the rather unusual British style bar within the hotel just for you, or off to bed ready for the journey and days ahead.
29th/30th December 2022 The itinerary is still to be finalised depending on events taking place in the area that are yet to be released but don't worry you won't be lacking things to see and do.
31st December 2022 Your New Year Eve Gala will take place within the hotel , exclusive to Spice, starting with an Aperitivo Reception , followed by a 5-course meal , as always expect plenty of food, wines and Italian entertainment , celebrating 2 New Years, Italian and the UK style.
New Year’s Day 1st January 2023
After a leisurely breakfast and depending on the weather, there will be an opportunity for an optional ebike experience, guided with a gentle tour for those looking for a leisurely ride around the surrounding area. Please note costs are tbc shortly.
In the evening there will be an informal buffet within the hotel with a few surprises local Pulgia style.
2nd January 2023 After breakfast, it’s time to say arrivederci to the team at the hotel and Wings and looking forward to the next Spice escapes Italian Adventure.
Please note further detailed itinerary will be provided along the year once the region has set its Christmas and New Year activities.
Travel & Stay

The Tesoretto is a superior hotel, please note that whilst the interior and grounds of this hotel are of a high standard, the surrounding area is traditional Salento style. The hotel is located in the town of Poggiardo just 5 minutes’ walk away, it’s also an ideal location for exploring the jewels of Salento. Air-conditioned, a lift, 2 Bars, 24-hour reception. All rooms have a balcony, en suite, heating, minibar, Sat TV, Safe and a Kettle, tea, coffee making facilities. Your hotel is set within a private walled area with an outside seating patio, open depending on the weather.
Breakfast is of a traditional Italian continental style; fresh seasonal fruit will be available and lots of tea and coffee, too!
The hotel has 2 types of accommodation, all rooms are of a superior standard, several bedrooms are deluxe suites including a Jacuzzi (no supplement and allocated on a first come basis) NB - there is an additional cost to be paid directly at the hotel reception each time the jacuzzi is used. All bedrooms have a large double bed, for twin clients sharing there will be one large double and one single bed (these are not allocated in advance so toss a coin if you can’t decide!).
Overflow Accommodation

This accommodation has been chosen firstly because of its unique traditional character, and secondly it is situated in the nearby village offering you the chance to either take the provided private shuttle service (available at set times) between the 2 hotels, or for those wishing too, you can walk between the 2 hotels, approx. a 10-minute walk.
The Lievito Madre Palace is a historic residence just a few steps from the historic centre of Poggiardo, it is in the typical Salento style in the ancient historical village.
The accommodation is small with just 5 bedrooms, it was originally a palace dating back to the 1800s. The bedrooms of the Lievito Madre Palace are located on the first floor.
All meals will be taken at the main group hotel.
Please note the Lievito Madre Palace is also a well-respected gourmet pizzeria too.

A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the European Union (EU).
UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU.
Once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC.
NB – A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance!
