Overview

Our popular hostel & bunk weekends are incredibly sociable, great value and get great feedback. This weekend we are in the Todmorden area which we don't often get to explore on these weekends and we have taken exclusive use of Mankinholes YHA. This one doesn't have large bunk rooms either so we have a pretty good chance of getting a good night's sleep!

We will be mucking in and cooking/organising breakfast on the Saturday and Sunday morning. On Friday evening Karen will prepare home made lasagne etc and puddings for everyone.

The Top Brink public house is just a 10 minute walk from the hostel and is famed for its pub grub and we have secured a booking for the Saturday night for a group meal (not included).

These weekends are very much about throwing yourself in to the Spice Spirit and helping out where needed especially cleaning up after breakfast and before we depart on the Sunday morning.

Walking: being located almost on top of the Pennine Way and within walking distance of the Calderdale Way there are plenty of options and our walk leader will pick a longer walk for the Saturday and a shorter one for the Sunday to get the most of the area. Martin is planning Studley Pike and Gaddings Dam (and you can go for a swim if the weather is nice; it is owned by a swimming group).

Non Walkers: For the non walkers there is plenty going on within driving distance. Mankinholes is located just 4 miles from the lovely village of Hebden Bridge, where there is plenty to see with lots of independent craft shops, gift shops and boutiques. Heptonstall is just a few minutes drive from Hebden Bridge with its cobbled streets, chapel and churches. The lovely Hollingworth Lake is also just 8 miles from our base for the weekend.

The bargain price includes breakfasts on both Saturday and Sunday, food for packed lunches and dinner at the hostel on the Friday.

These weekends are very laid back and a great chance to have a weekend away and get to meet like-minded Spice members. It’s a great starter weekend if you’ve not been away with us before - you can do as much or as little as you choose; it’s your weekend away.

Includes

Two nights' hostel accommodation, welcome drink, one cooked breakfast, one continental breakfast, two packed lunches, Friday dinner. Guided walks.

Extras

Your welcome drink is included along with tea and coffee all weekend, but if you will want other drinks then please bring them along.

Location & Itinerary

You can arrive from 4pm on Friday.

The itinerary for the weekend will be weather dependent and also depends on just what people want to do. For the non walkers there is plenty going on within driving distance.

Whatever you’ve got planned whether it’s a drive to the tea shop or some retail therapy, let us know then we’ll tell everyone over breakfast. There are lots of good pubs and tea shops close by for those who fancy a less strenuous weekend.

We'll be going to the nearby pub for a meal about 6:30pm on Saturday.

Martin will be leading walks on both Saturday and Sunday.

Food & Meals

On Friday evening Karen will prepare home made lasagne and puddings.

On Saturday we have a cooked breakfast before heading out for the day.

We have booked into the nearby Top Brink pub at 7pm for dinner on the Saturday and the cost of this is not included in the weekend. We will be in touch nearer the time with a menu so you can preorder your meal if you want to eat here.

On Sunday there will be a continental breakfast but with hot sandwiches available too.

Food will be provided for you to make up a packed lunch each day.

As always we will appreciate your help in preparing food or cleaning up afterwards.

Travel & Stay

This former 16th century manor house is located in a quiet rural hamlet with great views. It has a cosy lounge with a log burning stove, but we hope not to be burning logs in midsummer! The kitchen is well equipped and the Youth Hostel is rated as 4 star by visit England. We have 2 x two bedded rooms, 4 x four bedded rooms and 2 x six bedded rooms, all bedrooms have washbasin. There is a cosy lounge with comfortable Chesterfield seating where guests can relax and a spacious open plan dining room next to the kitchen.

We can't guarantee which room you will have but we will make an effort of keeping local Spice members together and room dorm share requests where possible. Bring some ear plugs if you're a light sleeper.

There are 3 toilets and 3 showers on the first floor. Please bring your own towels.

We have to leave the place as clean as we found it so everyone is expected to muck in and help stripping beds, and cleaning the communal areas including the kitchen etc.

Getting There

Follow signs from the A646 or A6033, YHA Mankinholes is ¼ mile east of the Top Brink pub.

There is space for ten cars at the front of the building. Please share transport where possible and do not block access for local farmers.
