Overview

A walk of two contrasting halves starting in a quiet valley nestled between The Cloud and the Macclesfield Canal. We start by gradually ascending ‘The Cloud’ (a prominent hill with gritstone ramparts) for a well-earned refreshment break on the top from where we can admire the panoramic views over Cheshire and the Peak District. We then descend through moorland and pasture to the Macclesfield Canal, admiring aqueducts and viaducts along the way. The canal provides easy walking to circle our way back to a point from which we can traverse fields and a quiet lane back to the cars. We will stop to have a picnic en route, so please bring sandwiches, and, as ever, please bring your walking boots.

Facilities: The toilets at the car park unfortunately are going to be closed for the foreseeable future. The nearest toilets are at 1) Brereton Heath Park (CW12 4SU), 6 miles away, midway between Holmes Chapel and Congleton and 2) Astbury Mere Country Park (CW12 4FR), 3 miles away, in Congleton.

Getting There

From Mcr head out to Macclesfield and from there take A523 towards Leek. About 4 miles from Macclesfield you cross the traffic light junction with the A54 and 1.3 miles beyond this you turn right into Tunstall Road, signposted Timbersbrook. Wind your way up down and around along this road for 3 miles, ignoring all turnoffs, and you reach a crossroads by a red telephone box. Turn right here into Weathercock Lane. The Timbersbrook Picnic Area Car Park where we meet is on your right after 0.1 miles. Postcode CW12 3PP for SatNav. Any probs call Richard on 07740 698432.
