Peak District Walk: Carsington Water, Kirk Ireton and Hognaston
Overview
We venture just outside the Peak District National Park today, but the countryside around Carsington Water is popular with walkers for good reason, we can expect fantastic views across the water.
From our meeting point at the water’s edge, we climb towards the village of Kirk Ireton then skirt the summit of “The Mountain” - perhaps a little ambitiously named – before a steepish descent takes us out of sight of the reservoir for a while.
We gain and then lose some height before a steeper ascent brings us to the summit of Madge Hill, our highest point of the day.
It’s all downhill from here, as we descend gradually through the fields towards the lake, with a nice flat final mile following the reservoir dam back to the car park.
Distance: 10 Miles

Location & Itinerary
Our Sunday walks are always popular and we go out all weathers and all through the year. All walks in the Peak District need to be classified as moderate due to the terrain. Easier Moderate Walks are generally half day only around 6-8 miles.
Full day or Harder Moderate walks are normally not more than 10-12 miles although sometimes slightly more in summer months.
If you've not done much hill walking recently regardless of your general fitness level, we'd recommend starting off on one of these shorter half day walks, typically of around 6 miles before tackling our slightly more serious full day walks.
The meet time is generally 10:15am for a start at 10:30am but some differ so please check the individual walks
