Overview

We'll set off from the Herdings area of Gleadless Valley. We'll follow part of the three valleys trail, crossing the county border into North East Derbyshire. Through woodland and fields, we'll reach Ridgeway Moor before taking a different route back to the start. We should also get a chance to learn about John Haslam's donkey!

Please dress appropriately for the weather, stout shoes or boots are recommended. There is no halfway food stop on the shorter evening walks but take snacks if you need and a drink.

We can't get together in the pub at the end but if you wish to bring a drink along we can drink it at a distance in the picnic area in Low Bradfield if it is open.

Distance: 5¼ miles approx.

This event is free and is strictly for members only. We are limited to a total of six people at present so do not delay if you want a place. Please book only if you fully intend to come along. If you do book and then for any reason you can't make it please let us know so we can offer the place to someone else. Do not attend if you have virus symptoms.

We must all observe the social distancing regulations. Please do not book unless you are prepared to keep a two metre distance from other walkers. We are not requiring members to wear face coverings, but you are welcome to do so if that makes you feel more comfortable.

Location & Itinerary

Is this for me?

There are a couple of steep sets of steps and several styles to negotiate. It could be muddy so wear suitable footwear.

Meeting Point

We'll meet in the layby by the entrance to Valley Park Community Primary School on Norton Avenue A6102. You can only access this by road if travelling north east. Please note that it is the layby near the school gate, and not the one by the playing fields.

Getting There

Gleadless is about three miles south of Sheffield Sheffield City Centre. The layby is on Norton Avenue at the gates of the school, but drive just beyond them and the yellow lines stop and you can park here. You can only access the layby if travelling north east. If you are on the other side of the dual carriageway, there is a roundabout around half a mile further on where you can turn around. If the layby is full, there's plenty more roadside parking by driving 150m further along Norton Avenue and turning left into Leighton Road.

Buses 18 and 18a pass here on Norton Avenue. Take the Bowman Drive stop in either direction.

Purple Line trams stop at Herdings Leighton Road, which is just around the corner from the layby.
