Elmley Castle and Bredon Hill Harder walk
Overview
New Coronavirus Restrictions Rules: Please be assured that this walk will be run within new “Rule of 6” government guidelines announced recently. More details are in the Before You Go section and this News Item
Join Trevor Hyde for this stunning 9 mile round trip from Elmley Castle with a total of 400m of climbing spread throughout the day. Starting with a couple of miles through gentle fields, we pass through Comberton churchyard then turn and climb steadily to gain the western end of Bredon Hill.
There follows a 4km ridge walk with great views, stopping for lunch at Banbury Tower in the ancient earthworks of a fort from 300BC. We descend off the eastern end and turn back on ourselves to follow a bridleway to the second ancient fort of Elmley Castle.
We then descend back into the village to the Queen’s Inn for refreshment.
The walk is expected to take about 4 hours.
Notes: Dogs are welcome, though there are a lot of sheep and pheasant on the route so any dogs will need to be on a lead the whole time. Walking poles will help those with dodgy knees when descending. Good hiking footwear is essential for this walk as it can be muddy in the second half after heavy rain. Waterproofs will be needed if only to protect for the wind on the main ridge. There are no toilets at the start. Bring a packed lunch and some water.
P.S: Bring binoculars to make the most of the views!
