Location & Itinerary

Durham is home to the resplendent Cathedral, which is located next to the Palace Green and is one of the best surviving examples of Romanesque architecture in Britain. Durham Castle stands opposite it. These two 11th century buildings have been a UNESCO World Heritage site for over 35 years. In fact Durham has one of the highest densities of Grade 1 Listed buildings in Britain.

The city sits within a compact loop of the River Wear and we will get great views of it from all sides on our Saturday evening River Cruise.

It's a lively place, with a wide selection of pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants along with a market hall and a selection of small independent shops as well as some of the usual chain stores.

Arrive at leisure on Good Friday. You can check into your room from 3pm.

7:30pm. Meet us for dinner in the hotel's restaurant. This will be a great way to meet some of the others on the weekend.

On Easter Saturday we'll meet up at breakfast.

Late morning. There will be a guided tour of Durham Cathedral if you wish to join us. After the tour we will be meeting for a coffee in the Undercroft Restaurant in the cathedral where we will be handing out the clues for the treasure hunt which will take in many sights of the city.

Early afternoon. We will put you into teams for the treasure hunt. It will take you around the historic city centre, and there will be plenty of time to explore the city and maybe stop for a lunch break.

Early evening. We will meet up in the bar and announce the winners of the treasure hunt.

We'll leave the hotel to walk to the quayside to board our party boat, The Prince Bishop. We will be able to see Durham from all sides on the water and will moor up for our BBQ dinner with a view of the cathedral. Then there will be music and dancing on board!

After disembarking, we may call in a pub or two on the way back to the hotel to continue the evening.

On Easter Sunday morning we will meet up at breakfast.

Late morning. We will depart on an optional guided walk heading out of the centre along the riverside and will take in some more sites, including the Old Durham Gardens, and may stop at a local hostelry for a refreshment break!

Th rest of the day is free to explore more of Durham, and maybe visit one of the museums, or enjoy the cafes or bars.

On Sunday evening we will meet up at the hotel and walk a short distance to a restaurant for our final dinner together.

Breakfast is included on Monday

There may be an opportunity to book an optional tour of the Durham Castle.

Check out of the hotel is at 12pm.

Here at Spice your health, safety and wellbeing are of paramount importance. Whether travelling on holiday or attending Spice weekends away, in the UK or overseas, it is always advisable to have adequate travel insurance in case of emergency, cancellation, etc.

Travel insurance is an important aspect to booking a weekend or holiday, giving you protection against unforeseen circumstances that could otherwise spoil your trip. We also strongly encourage the need for a personal travel insurance policy that includes Covid 19 cover.

While we cannot recommend specific insurance policies as everyone’s requirements are personal to them, Spice have linked up with market leader Staysure Travel Insurance, which you may like to take a look at.
