Event going ahead: Please be assured that this event can go ahead, From the 29th March we can have groups of 6 on outdoor activities.

Starting from the village of Castleton at the head of the Hope valley and the home of Blue John and Peveril Castle, we first take the steady climb to Hollin’s Cross where the coffin route passes from Edale to Hope.

From here it’s a steady climb to Mam Tor an Iron age hill fort from 1200BC.

We then circle the end of the valley to descend steeply down the steep Cave Dale passing below the castle back into the village for refreshments.

Leader: Mick Cornfield

Distance: 7 miles

Location & Itinerary

Is this for me?

Our Sunday walks are always popular and we go out all weathers and all through the year. All walks in the Peak District need to be classified as moderate due to the terrain. Easier Moderate Walks are generally half day only around 6-8 miles.

Full day or Harder Moderate walks are normally not more than 10-12 miles although sometimes slightly more in summer months.

If you've not done much hill walking recently regardless of your general fitness level, we'd recommend starting off on one of these shorter half day walks, typically of around 6 miles before tackling our slightly more serious full day walks.

Meeting Point

The meet time is generally 10:15am for a start at 10:30am but some differ so please check the individual walks

Host & Everything Else

In the UK, weather can change rapidly so bring plenty of layers, waterproofs and ideally have proper walking boots with ankle support or similar stout footwear.

Jeans and basic trainers are not appropriate. Gaiters are definitely recommended and / or waterproof trousers, it can be wet and muddy! A drink/flask and a snack are always a good idea

COVID “Rule of six” We have just confirmed (with the gov.uk and Sport England websites), that as this is an outdoor physical activity, and as we are an organisation, we are allowed larger numbers on these activities. However, to be a responsible organisation, and to ensure our members are comfortable with group sizes, we are restricting numbers to a lower level than usual.

We are still required to maintain social distance on walks, and it goes without saying that if you have any coronavirus symptoms (see below) please don’t come on the event but let the leader / host know.

Symptoms are: A high temperature, a new, continuous cough or a loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste

If you have any such symptoms, please see this link to the Coronavirus information on the NHS website.

General walk information:

You can buy ten walks for just £45. Having allocated your ten walks we can roll any over to a later date if needed but you must give us seven days’ notice as with other Spice Cancellations.

For those who've never been on one of our walks before there is now a "First Timers" option - You can have your first walk at half price – that’s just £2.75 to try the walks out. Please call or email the office if you would like to take advantage of this.

Our walks are always popular and we go out all weathers and all through the year.

All walks in the Peak District need to be classified as moderate due to the terrain. Many members share lifts to get to the meet point so although for some of you the brilliant scenery of the Peak District will be a little distance away you shouldn't have to go on your own which should be a whole lot nicer.

If you've unsure about your level of fitness or if you haven’t done much hill walking recently you may want to start off on one of our shorter, typically of around 6 to 7 miles to “test your fitness” before progressing to any longer, more serious walks.
