Overview

If you are a Call the Midwife fan this weekend is for you!

Have you ever wondered where BBC One’s award-winning drama Call the Midwife is filmed?

Well, some of it is based in the Historic Chatham Dockyard.

Following several requests Arlene & Steve have developed a new social weekend which will include a tour of some of the film set / locations.

The Tour: Walk in the footsteps of Nurse Trixie Franklin, Sister Julienne and Dr Turner and explore where the real drama happens. The walking tour is led by your very own costumed midwife. Along the tour you’ll recognise the cobbled streets and buildings of ‘Poplar’, plus iconic locations such as the Grosvenor Hotel and ‘Chummy’s Hill’, where Nurse Noakes famously learnt to ride her bike. You will see just how Neal Street Productions transform the 400 year old Chatham dockyard into to 1950’s East London. The tour culminates with their exclusive Call the Midwife exhibition containing set, props and costumes.

We stay in a lovely Spa hotel so you can chill out for the day on Sunday and book yourself a spa day.

The plan is to visit the Dockyard on the Saturday. We will have a guided tour which will be led by our very own midwife. We will have lunch together. The we visit the Victorian ropery to learn about the ancient art of ropemaking, its vital role in supporting Chatham’s shipbuilding and discover why our enormous double ropewalk is ¼ mile long.

On the Sunday there will be the option to enjoy the hotel spa or visit another attraction in the area, details to follow.

The weekend starts…

Friday: Travel at your leisure; either come earlier and enjoy the hotel spa or arrive in the evening.

Friday Evening: We will eat in the hotel and Steve will give a welcome chat afterwards.

Saturday: We will drive to Chatham Docks and for our Call the Midwife tour. We will have a private guided tour which will be led by our very own midwife.

Lunch is pre booked and included in the price.

After lunch we visit the Victorian ropery.

Saturday Evening: We will eat in the hotel and maybe have a quiz.

Sunday: You can either enjoy the hotel spa or visit another attraction in the area, details to follow. The activities on the Sunday are likely to last until around 2pm

Travel Insurance: When you travel on holiday, even in the UK it is always advisable to have adequate personal travel insurance in case of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances. The sooner you book this the better, as if you need to cancel the weekend break due to one of the covered reasons you may not be as financially disadvantaged as if you didn’t have cover.

While we cannot recommend specific insurance policies, as everyone’s requirements are personal to them, Spice Escapes have linked up with market leader Staysure Travel Insurance which you may like to take a look at.
