Overview

We are off to Street to stay in a beautiful Swiss-style chalet which used to be the former holiday home for the Clarke’s shoe factory workers. It stands on the brow of a hill, overlooking Glastonbury Tor. This bunkhouse was refurbished over last winter, so it will all be new and fresh.

Included in the weekend price are 2 night’s hostel accommodation, 2 breakfasts and one evening meal. A small deposit of £20 will secure your place.

The accommodation has 7 rooms of varying sizes, in dormitory style of a very good standard, all having a washbasin. There is also the addition of two wooden camping pods available to sleep in - either double or twin share basis.  Please note the camping pods are outside and do not have a bathroom or washing facilities - you would need to come in to the main house for these. We can’t guarantee which rooms you will be allocated as it depends on bookings and male/female split., but please state on booking if you would like to stay in a camping pod.  The bed linen is provided and there are 3 toilets and 2 showers but please bring your own towels. There is a well equipped kitchen, dining room/lounge and there is parking available.

This is a fun, muck in and help type of weekend so you are expected to help with the cooking and clearing up after the meals.

Whether you are a brand new member or an ‘old hat’ at this type of weekend, if you like having fun with like-minded Spice members then this is a great weekend to book.

Location & Itinerary

The plan for the weekend is for everyone to arrive on the Friday afternoon/evening. After dinner in the hostel you can take a short walk to one of the nearby pubs for some liquid refreshments (not included in the price) or stay in the hostel and socialise with your new friends.

On Saturday morning you will have various options open to you - Glastonbury is 3 miles away - it is known for its ancient and medieval sites, many rich in myth. Glastonbury Tor is a tower-topped hill linked to Arthurian legend, overlooking the marshy Somerset Levels. Once said to be King Arthur’s burial place, Glastonbury Abbey is a ruined monastery dating to the 7th century. Nearby, centuries-old Glastonbury Tribunal has a museum with Iron Age artefacts. The village is great for a look around, the high street is full of shops you won’t find anywhere else! As Cheddar gorge and caves are close by, you can go adventure caving, rock climbing, and there are various caves that you can explore, there is also a lookout tower (274 steps up).

Saturday night there is a two course meal booked at a nearby pub. This is not included in the price. We can relax over a drink or two and then perhaps we’ll return to the hostel to play some games.

On Sunday, we can head out to Street and visit Clarke’s village. This is an outlet shopping village and has over 90 shops offering up to 60% off their recommended retail prices. These include – Calvin Klein, Clarks, Ecco, North Face, Hobbs, Levi’s, Musto.

For those not wanting to shop, a 5-6 mile walk will be offered in the area.

Please note that we have to vacate the hostel when we leave to visit Clarks or go for the walk, with everyone helping to leave it tidy.

The trip does not have to end there. You can arrange to go with other Spice members for lunch somewhere close by once the shopping and walking is finished.

All of the above is optional, you can do as little or as much as you like.
