Overview

The Great Hall is delighted to welcome visitors for Heritage Open Days to discover the fascinating history of this former castle site & law court. The finest surviving medieval aisled hall of the 13th century, it once formed part of the magnificent Winchester castle which was founded in 1067 by William the Conqueror shortly after his victory at the Battle of Hastings. In 1222 Henry III, with his love of architecture, began the construction of one of the earliest Gothic styled medieval halls.

Dominating the Great Hall is the iconic Round Table, famously linked to the ancient legends of King Arthur and his Knights. Uncover its unique role and the influence it had on kings throughout history. From historians to poets, its mystique has captivated people’s imaginations for centuries.

This special historical tours will explore the fascinating stories of The Great Hall, Winchester Castle and the trials and tribulations of the Great Hall as a law court. Visitors will join one of our enthusiastic tour guides with special access to The Council Chamber building and Former Grand Jury room not usually open to the public. Find out about the fascinating history of Winchester Castle and some colourful characters of the Great Hall's past - from Kings and Queens to judge's and prisoners.

The Great Hall will also be hosting an exhibition entitled First 100 Years, following the timeline of women in law, marking the key milestones achieved by women decade by decade to celebrate the centenary of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919, so you may wish to arrive early or plan to stay on later to give you time to see this and learn about the pioneering women who paved the way for women to enter the legal profession today. The Great Hall is open from 10.00am until 4.00pm.
