Overview

This unusual event hasn't been in the programme for a few years now but Mark has kindly invited us back to his forge in Lichfield. It was always thoroughly enjoyed by those that went as you can see by the feedback section below.

We can only take 6 around the forge at a time (you can’t have too many irons in the fire as they say!), so please book quickly if you want to be there..

This is a simple, fun evening with a Blacksmith around his forge where he manufactures a range of beautiful objects such as iron gates, decorative ironwork and even the candlesticks for Lichfield Cathedral!

A small group of Spice members will be issued with safety equipment including leather aprons before a full safety briefing. We will then be taught how to work hot metal with hammer and tongues on the anvil. There will be demonstrations before we get to make an item ourselves.

The event should last a couple of hours.

● "Blacksmithing was just great! Mark showed us what to do and all 5 of us got stuck in to something none of us would ever have had the chance to do without Spice. This is what I enjoyed so much about this group. A really different evening, real good fun, we learnt good stuff and came away with what we made, even though my first attempt simply melted my carefully crafted, happily hammered steel bar away to nearly nothing!

Thanks to you folks for organising all these goodies for us to enjoy"

●"Definitely an opportunity to try something different, a really enjoyable evening."

● "This was an unusual and fun evening, attempting to recreate a skill I had thought had died out, and which isn't as easy as the blacksmith made it look! There's something very satisfying about heating metal till it's white hot and then hammering it into a shape - although not always the shape you intended! Great fun, I would recommend this evening as something very different, and therapeutic!"

● "We need to do next step event - a half day somewhere between the Blacksmith Evening and the full day run by the Black Country Museum"

● "Enjoyable fun way to spend an evening learning about a new and seldom seen skill."

● "Great fun, good value and excellent hosts."
