Overview

Our popular hostel weekends are incredibly sociable, great value and get great feedback and for this bank holiday weekend we are taking over the YHA hostel at Ironbridge Coalbrookdale in Shropshire, a new venue for us!

The hostel is located within the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, home to 10 family friendly museums, littered with industrial archaeology and brimming with tea rooms, pubs and eateries and is a mile from the famous Ironbridge itself. The youth hostel is housed in a converted grade II listed building. You can walk to the hands-on science attraction Enginuity and visit the Blast Furnace where Abraham Darby’s new method of smelting iron sparked the Industrial Revolution.

These weekends are very much about throwing yourself in to the Spice Spirit and helping out where needed especially cleaning up after meals and before we depart on the Monday morning.

We will be mucking in and cooking/organising breakfast on the Saturday and Sunday morning with a continental breakfast on the Monday morning and evening meals each night. There will be one of Lauren's lovely buffets organised for our Friday night arrival and with hot meals on the other nights.

With so much to see and do in the area this weekend will attract walkers and those wanting to explore what the area has to offer from museums, to coffee shops and of course the fabulous ironbridge itself. Within driving distance you can visit Blist Hill Victorian Village, Bridgenorth Cliff Railway, Coalport China Museum, RAF Cosford and many other places.

This is an expensive hostel to hire which is reflected in the weekend price but we felt with everything that the area has to offer, that it is worth it and we hope that you agree. It is still a fabulous value weekend, you just need to factor in your favourite soft drinks or tipple!

Travel & Stay

We have taken exclusive hire of YHA Ironbridge Coalbrookdale, a converted Grade 2 listed building located within the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site sat within beautiful grounds. Housed in an iconic local building, the former Literary and Scientific Institute, built with funds from the Coalbrookdale Company in the 1850s, this building has seen it all. From its original users who were honing their creative skills for use in design and decoration for the Coalbrookdale Company, to evacuees in the second world war, and its use as a book stack for the local library, ownership by the local council for adult education courses, and finally to its conversion to a youth hostel in 1980.

By 1785 the Coalbrookdale district had become the foremost industrial area in the world. It was particularly celebrated for its innovations: the first iron bridge, the first iron boat, the first iron rails and the first steam locomotive. Tourists came from far and wide to see the sights, and artists came to paint it all – furnaces lighting up the night sky was a favourite subject.

There is free wifi available in the social spaces.

There's a mixture of ensuite rooms and rooms with shared bathrooms accommodating between 2 and 8 people in bunk beds. Bedding is provided so unless you have a favourite pillow or comforter you don’t need to carry your bedding with you. There is a large lounge and dining room for us to use as well as a commercial kitchen.

We can’t guarantee which size room you will be in however the smaller rooms will be allocated to the early bookers or couples wherever possible. If you have to have a bottom bunk (for medical reasons), please let us know at the time of booking as most people would prefer a bottom bunk but there are as many top bunks as bottoms that we need to fill!

Host & Everything Else

Covid/Infection Guidance: As a matter of respect to other members when attending events, we ask that you take the following guidance into account. People with symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19, and who have a high temperature or do not feel well, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with others. Those who are asked – or choose to test – and get a positive COVID-19 result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days following the day of their positive result. Normal Spice Terms & Conditions apply.

Travel Insurance: It is also recommended that when travelling on holiday or attending Spice weekends away in the UK or overseas that you have adequate travel insurance in case of emergency, cancellation, etc. Travel insurance is an important aspect to booking a weekend or holiday, giving you protection against unforeseen circumstances. We also strongly recommend a personal travel insurance policy that includes COVID-19 cover. While we cannot recommend specific insurance policies as everyone’s requirements are personal to them, Spice have linked up with market leader Staysure Travel Insurance which you may like to take a look at.
