We all know that one person who does nothing but work. Even when they’re not working and supposed to be relaxing, all they seem to talk or think about is work – it’s like it’s their only function. It’s a surprisingly common trait. In fact, I bet everyone reading this can think of at least one person this relates to. A few of you might even say that it’s you. But while a passion and dedication to your work is fantastic and admirable, there is something to be said for ‘too much of a good thing’. No matter what you do in life, it’s important to keep up a healthy work-life balance. Your mind, body and soul will all benefit, and it will actually make you better at your work. But how? Today Spice will tell you why letting loose and having some fun is exactly what the doctor ordered. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!

 

You’re Less Likely To Burn Out

 

The problem with doing something constantly, even if you’re not pouring your all into it, is that you’re much more likely to burn out. Whilst occasional stress is normal for every job, burnouts aren’t, and working yourself to the bone is a great way to ensure one. According to The Help Guide, burnouts occur ‘when you feel overwhelmed and unable to meet constant demands.” When you are burnt out, it affects every single area of your life - including your work, relationships, your personal life and your social life – negatively. You become disengaged, grumpy, tired, unable to keep up and intolerant. But if you have maintained a healthy work-life balance and a separation between work and home, you are 10x less likely to burn out. So if you find yourself working long hours, or that work stress is seeping into your home life, it’s time to have a talk with your manager and reassess the balance.

 

You Pay Attention To What Matters

 

While you are work, work should absolutely take up your focus and attention. But what we often see with people who don’t have a healthy work-life balance is that they have stopped paying attention to other areas of their life, with work consuming all of their focus. This means that you won’t be giving attention to your home, your children, your partner, your friends or even your health. Not only is this going to reflect negatively on you and your ability to focus at work, but you will quickly find that a lot of the people around you are very, very annoyed at you. Instead, when you are at home your mind should be focussed on what is going on in front of you and enjoying the experience, leaving the work thinking at work, where you can actually do something about it. And if you have no husband, wife, partner or children pulling for you to be at home, the work life balance can easily disappear entirely.

Fewer Health Problems

 

It’s no secret that when we are run down, tired or stressed, our immune system is the thing that suffers the most. Both chronic and intense stress can cause a variety of health related illness, and the lack of a healthy work-life balance is one of the leading causes of stress in our country. For example, stress can make you more susceptible to catching colds or the flu, it can cause significant digestive problems and discomfort and have adverse effects on the respiratory system – not to mention all of the long term mental health problems. But taking the time to look after yourself and your well-being by exercising, eating well and relaxing, you can massively limit your health problems. Simply by leaving the work life at work and engaging fully in your life outside it, you will find yourself feeling happier and healthier all round.
