Race Night

Date: Friday 27th March
Place: The Moseleys Arms, West Bar, Sheffield
Time: 7.30pm
Cost: £8.50 includes ownership of one horse
Slots: Loads!

Another brand new gambling night for us and an excellent chance for us to raise some money for Les on his bike ride for MacMillan Cancer Relief. Basically it's all the fun of being at the races except it's indoors where it's nice and warm and there's plenty of beer. All the action of the races is brought to you on the TV screen and we have a compere and bookie to ensure the evening runs smoothly.

So how does it all work? There are 7 races with 8 horses in each race. The horses can be bought at £3 each and you get one horse automatically included in your booking of the event. If exactly 56 of you book it'll work perfectly - however the chances of that happening are very slim so if anyone wants to buy an extra horse add £3 onto your form (and a 2nd horses name) as we do need to sell all the horses prior to the race. You need to name your horse, mother and rider along the format (Hores) by (Mother) out of (Rider) - the funnier the titles the better e.g. FLAT CAKE by BAKER out of FLOUR or BUMPY LANDING by PILOT out of CONTROL or NEWLYWEDS by NEVER out of BED so please, please put your horses/mothers/riders names on the booking form as we need to type them up prior to the race & it'll take me ages to phone round you all!

We are also looking for 7 of you with local businesses/contacts to sponsor each of the races. You need to donate a prize to the value of approximately £10 (probably something relating to your business) and your business will be publicised for that race. The owner of the horse that wins then receives your donated prize. So again please let me know on the booking form If you can sponsor a race & what your prize will be.

As well as horse ownership there is also betting on the horses so that everyone can get involved in each race whether they own a horse or not. So you could go home in profit. All proceeds from the event and the ownership of horses will be donated to Les. So why not come and join us for our Spice night at the races it'll be fun all the way and it's all in a very good cause.

Les's Ride For MacMillan Cancer

Les Ennis (who many of you know as Spice's friendly baker) is in true Spice spirit taking on a fantastic challenge for a very worthy cause and Spice will be sponsoring and supporting Les along the way. Les is participating in The High Atlas Cycling Challenge in Morocco between 9th & 17th May 1998 to raise funds for Macmillan Charity Relief. This is no mean feat as he will be covering a total distance of 265km (on average that's 50km per day) along mountainous tracks in the Atlas mountains with 95% of the route being off road. MacMillan Cancer Relief provides invaluable help and support to both cancer sufferers and their families. Les's uncle died of cancer and Les was so impressed with the help and support they received from Macmillan Cancer relief that he's decided to take on this challenge.

Les needs to raise a minimum of £2000 but Les being Les wants to go that much better and raise at least £5000. So it's pay back time for all those free cakes that have been so readily available on events. As they say "You can't have your cake and eat it!". Les will be around on events selling raffle tickets for a fantastic choice of prizes that he's being collecting so if you see him dig into your pockets as every £1 is £1 nearer Les's target. We will also be running a few events across the next couple of months which I hope you will all support to raise the money Les requires and the first of these is detailed below.
