DID YOU LEARN HOW TO USE A MAP AND COMPASS YEARS AGO AND YOU'RE NOW A BIT 'RUSTY'? NEVER LEARNED? DON'T HAVE A CLUE?
Spice brings you a chance to gain one of the national Navigation Awards. It's not compulsory to go in for them you can just come along to learn a bit more about map and compass too if you wish.. There are three levels; bronze, silver and gold which require different levels of navigation competence. Each participant will be given the choice of which if any of the awards they'd like to go forThe bronze can normally be completed in a day, silver takes two sessions to complete. Smudge from All Outdoors is one of the very few instructors in our area qualified to do the assessment for the new awards. Successful participants can buy a badge and certificate to treasure! Even if you've never done any navigation before you will be able to get to the bronze level under the expert instruction of Smudge and crew. The National Navigation Award Scheme is intended for people of all abilities intending to explore the open countryside. Each of the three sections can be self contained and each includes an achievement level which will be validated to represent a national standard.
The day will cater for beginners - A basic introduction to map and compass work. Here's an opportunity to acquire the basic skills. How to read a map, plot a grid reference, take compass bearings etc. All you need to know to understand a simple navigation, working in twos, map and compass provided. Or for those of you who have done a bit before we will include some macro navigation and the real highlight electronic satellite navigation. Why can longer routes take less time? What mistakes do experienced navigators make? You need never get lost going to Spice events (or maybe that should be if I go on the course you need never get lost going to Spice events!). A perfect chance to get exactly what you want out of a day with superb instruction on hand with a badge and certificate to take home for those that wish to enter the navigation awards scheme. There is not much walking at all with the emphasis of the day being on you learning new skills not going for a ramble and we will of course be close to the pub at all times.
