Probably one of the most talked about events that we run. If you've not done it yet just speak to anyone who has and they'll tell you that you should; it's the ultimate in abesiling in this country. Malham Cove is one of the best known landmarks in the country - an awe inspiring 300 foot cliff worn concave by the action of the long-dead waterfall. It's as high as anything in the country that you can abseil off but many time more dramatic. You will feel as if you're going off the edge of the world because the cove is part of the edge of a plateau. On a good day you can see for miles. As this event always sells out we've changed the format for 1998 to try and give you even more chance to get on it. We'll be running two ropes so you have twice the chance of getting goes at the abesil. The day will start from liam and finish at 4pm. You can turn up whenever you like between those sessions but obviously the earlier you turn up the more goes you're likely to get. You'll register at the foot of the cove and then take your turn in order of people waiting after having a practice on the small abesil. Our day starts with an introduction to the equipment and technique of abeeiling followed by a practice abesil. Then it's straight onto the big one. Everyone who wants a second go will get one. If time permits (and your stomach) you may even get a third or fourth if you're there early, the main limitation being the time (and energy) it takes too get to the top of the cove. Wrap up warm as there is a fair bit of waiting around as each person takes quite a while to have their go. For the abesil any loose clothing will do, trainers are ideal and bring some gloves to protect your hands. If the weather isn't suitable (e.g. high winds) for such a big abseil the event will be postponed. There will be a weather check message left on he Spice (South York) ansaphone on 0114 2488161 so ring before you set off to check if it's a goer or not. There are a few Spice groups feeding onto these dates so don't snooze & lose & we're unlikely to get anymore dates this season.
