All Inclusive Value for a Wonderful Greek Island
Rhodes’ centuries-old attractions have been joined by buzzing beach
resorts ready for your summer enjoyment.
Although
Rhodes is a year round holiday destination and average temperatures in
May are a pleasant 23 degrees, we will be visiting just before the main
season really kicks off so it may be a little quieter in some of the
resorts but this never seems to deter Spicer’s from being the life and
soul of the party!
The narrow streets, imposing gates and ancient castle of Rhodes Old Town
all crowd inside a curtain of medieval walls; even the best theme park
would be hard-pushed to emulate!
The haunt of the Knights of St. John is dominated by the Palace of the
Grand Masters. Lining the streets are ancient inns linked to many
different nationalities. There are Ottoman mosques and ancient temples
dedicated to Aphrodite all within the city’s walls. Curio shops entice
you in for great buys in leather, rugs, ceramics and delicate costume
jewellery.
Soak up the past in Lindos
Staying just 3km from town, you’ll be well placed to explore these
treasures. Lindos, considered by many to be the most picturesque city on
the island, and its Acropolis are also not far away. Make up your mind
on an optional boat trip, or take our round-the-island tour; a great way
to get your bearings !
Other options on offer slice through scenic orange and lemon groves en
route to the Valley of the Butterflies. You can go wine-tasting in
Embona Village, sample local honey in the pretty hamlet of Siana, take a
4x4 safari or an escorted scuba adventure.
Sponge down in Symi
Another must-do is a visit to the picturesque island of Symi, famous for
its natural sponges and said to have the most beautiful harbour in all
of Greece. Gorgeous Symi is stacked with layer upon layer of houses,
some white, some pastel yellow, but most with neoclassical pediments – a
vivid reminder that 100 years ago, this was the richest island in the
Dodecanese.
Nightlife on Rhodes caters for all tastes. Away from the energetic
rhythms of Faliraki on the south coast, traditional venues abound in the
Old Town’s Orfanidi Street (aka ‘Bar Street’), or on your doorstep
around the resort of Ixia itself. There’s a wide range of venues from
clubs to tavernas ringing with live Greek folk music.
