Possibly one of the best short adventure trips on the planet!

This trip has been put together especially for Spice so it is pretty unique! It offers the adventurous awesome scenery waterfalls, rainforests, wildlife, hot springs, caves, demanding hiking, pristine lakes, interesting culture and of course a volcano all in a few days in Lombok. Then we visit the stunning Komodo National Park where we will paddle between the islands, camp on uninhabited islands with glorious beaches and visit small stilted villages. We will have the chance to swim and snorkel on the most stunning reefs as well as explore the islands by foot.

Mount Rinjani lies within the boundaries of the Gunung Rinjani National Park, a 40,000 hectare reserve. The park has a rich variety of plants and animals, including the rare black Ebony leaf monkey, the long tailed grey macaque, ruda deer and porcupine as well as a variety of coloured birds.

The climb to the rim of the volcano is extremely hard and a reasonable level of fitness is needed, however the trek is truly rewarding. The second part of the adventure is in the Komodo National Park which is made up of over two dozen islands between Sumbawa and Flores and is home to the largest lizard in the world, the Komodo Dragon. The dragon is just one attraction of the park; the area boasts some of the best marine life with dozens of pristine reefs.

Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1/2 – Depart the UK and arrive in Bali then transfer to your hotel.
Day 3 - Transfer to Denpasar Airport for a flight to Lombok. From there we will be taken you to the Sheraton Hotel on Sengiggi Beach. There will be a briefing on the climb either today or the following morning. The day is free to shop for last minute things.
Day 4 – Rinjani Mountain Trek. An early start for the beginning of a challenging day ahead. We will be collected by car and transferred to Lawang. From there we will trek through savannah like country, up the steep outer rim and camp at base camp. (8 hours walk).

Day 5 - Another early day with a 2am wake for our summit attempt. We hope to reach the summit by sunrise, about 0630am for the awesome views over the crater lake, Bali and Sumbawa. We then walk down to the shore of Segara Anak.
Day 6 - Today will be spent relaxing in the nearby hot springs and exploring the steaming Milk caves. After a satisfying lunch it’s a testing trek up the other side of the caldera to the northern rim camp. Sunset from here is awesome.
Day 7 - We are not in a hurry anymore as we are satisfied with what we have done. We head down to Senaru via pristine primary rain forests. We have a good chance to see some wildlife today. Overnight in a local guest house.
Day 8 - After breakfast we will drive back to Mataram for our flight to Bali and then transit there for our flight to Labuan Bajo Flores. Overnight in Eco Lodge.

Day 9 – Komodo Kayaking. The following morning after a briefing and safety checks we will do a short practice paddle to ensure both our comfort and safety. From the lodge we will be transferred into the heart of the National Park with our Kayaks. Our drop off point will be Mangyatan Island. From there we will paddle south towards Rinca Island. Our first night will be spent on Wainilu Island just off the coast of Rinca. We will have plenty of time to snorkel and swim. Night in tents under the stars.
Day 10 - We will rise early to paddle to the Rinca Rangers Office. This morning we go looking for Komodo Dragons and on Rinca they abound. If we are lucky we may even see them eating a morning snack. On Rinca we will go on a 2 hour trek into the hills observing troupes of monkeys, water buffalo, deer and maybe even snakes. After lunch we will get back into our kayaks and paddle north to a small island called Nusapimpe. We hope to get there early afternoon so we can relax, snorkel and swim. Late in the afternoon we will hop back into our kayaks and paddle for 10 minutes to Kaaba, a mangrove island home to 1000’s of bats. We will watch them as they leave their nest for a night of feeding. Paddle back to Nusapimpe for a night under the stars.

Day 11 - This is our last day of kayaking. We will paddle all the way back to the Bajo Eco Lodge along the coast of Flores. We will see flying fish and if we are lucky a turtle or two. We will be back at the eco lodge by lunch time. Free time in Labuan Bajo.
Day 12/13 - Today we will fly back to Bali to join our international flight home.

WHAT TO EXPECT
You are embarking on an adventure in a place and amongst people whose lives are very different from your own. Many aspects of life in Indonesia will seem unusual. Remember that these are often the same aspects that make an area an exotic and attractive destination. While boat expeditions are considered easy, no trek is easy, even those rated “easy or moderate”. In addition to the personal physical challenges you may face, travel conditions can present unexpected obstacles, such as rough and bumpy roads and changeable weather. To prepare for this “pack” a flexible and relaxed attitude. Bring a spirit of adventure and inquiry, a healthy sense of humour and a willingness to encounter the unexpected, and you will find your trip to Indonesia the adventure of a lifetime!

Level of fitness required
For the trekking component we suggest people need to have an above average level of fitness. The summit day can be very tough however this is more a mind over matter issue more than anything. It is essential that trekkers have comfortable fort wear to prevent blisters. The terrain is rocky so waterproof shoes are not required. We suggest that trekkers train with a pack even if they don’t intend carrying it (we can hire a Personal Porter for US$120 ) The training they do should reflect their activity so as many hills as possible is our suggestion every weekend leading up to the trip.
Paddling experience required
Kayakers do not need any kayaking experience. While these are sit-in Sea Kayaks, they are expedition type and as such they are wider than a normal K2 giving them superb stability. We will do a practice run to get people familiar with the craft before we start paddling. The kayaks have a rudder system operated by foot peddles so they are easy to maneuver. We do suggest participants do do a little upper body work such as push ups to build some core and upper body strength.
